Hardly any gold coin is recognised at a glance as reliably as the Krugerrand. This set combines five specimens of the 2026 issue in the sought-after Reverse Proof version – a genuine rarity for connoisseurs and enthusiasts. As an exclusive collector's coin with a mintage of only 500 pieces per year of issue, a world-famous design meets an especially refined finish here. Owning five coins from such a strictly limited series together is a rare stroke of luck for collectors.
Reverse Proof: the special Proof finish
With Reverse Proof, the South African Mint reverses the usual appearance. While in the classic Proof finish the field shines with a mirror-like gloss and the design is frosted, here it is exactly the opposite: the background appears velvety frosted, while Paul Kruger and the springbok stand out in the fine mirror shine of the Proof finish. This contrast makes the reliefs appear vivid and three-dimensional – a visual effect that clearly distinguishes this Krugerrand gold coin from the ordinary bullion strike. It is precisely this elaborate minting quality combined with the low mintage that underlies the value appreciation potential of this issue.
A world-famous design, a rare finish and a very low mintage – this combination makes the set a sought-after item for collectors.
Design and history of the Gold Krugerrand
The Gold Krugerrand shows the portrait of Paul Kruger, President of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1900, on the obverse. The reverse features the springbok, South Africa's national animal, appearing to leap across the steppe – a design by sculptor Coert Steynberg that has remained almost unchanged since the first minting in 1967. The coin is named after Paul Kruger as well as the Rand, South Africa's legal tender since 1961.
The Krugerrand was the first modern bullion coin in the world and remains the best-selling gold coin of all time to this day. It was not until 1980 that the smaller denominations – including the 1/4 oz version featured here – were introduced, opening up this popular classic to a wider audience. Internationally, the coin is also spelled "Krugerrand" and is traded worldwide.

Preserving value with gold
Gold is considered mankind's oldest store of value and has accompanied trade between civilisations for over 6,000 years. Beyond its purely collectible value, the yellow precious metal preserves its intrinsic worth and serves long-term wealth protection. Physical gold also traditionally enjoys great trust as an inflation hedge and as crisis protection. In Germany, profits from the sale of gold are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year, and investment gold is exempt from VAT. This set thus combines the appeal of a limited edition with the enduring qualities of the precious metal – a well-considered piece for any discerning collection.
