The Krugerrand – the world's first modern bullion coin
The Krugerrand has been minted since 1967. It was the very first modern gold bullion coin and paved the way for countless people to own gold privately. From 1980 onwards, smaller formats of the series were added, including the popular 1/4 oz variant. To this day, the Krugerrand is considered the most traded and best-known gold coin in the world – the model for all later bullion coins from countries around the globe.
Design with character: Paul Kruger and the springbok
The obverse shows the portrait of Paul Kruger, President of the South African Republic in the late 19th century. On the reverse, the springbok, South Africa's national animal, leaps across the coin, designed by sculptor Coert Steynberg. The coin is named after Kruger and the Rand, which has been South Africa's currency since 1961. This combination of a historical figure and a lively animal depiction has made the design unmistakable to this day.
Fineness, weight and craftsmanship
Each Krugerrand is made of 22-carat gold with a fineness of 916.67/1,000. The remaining share is copper – this makes the coin more durable and gives it its characteristic, slightly reddish-golden colour. Each of the three coins contains 7.78 g of fine gold with a diameter of 22.00 mm; together that is 23.34 g of pure gold. The set is delivered in a high-quality case.
Strict limitation: only 2,000 pieces worldwide
This edition, issued in Proof quality, is a genuine rarity. The extremely low mintage meets strong demand from collectors around the globe – a combination that underpins a high appreciation potential. Anyone who values rarely minted editions will find here a particularly desirable collector's coin that stands out through its clear limitation.
Gold is the oldest currency in the world – it has never had a value of zero and has shone for thousands of years. As a proven store of value, it has accompanied mankind for over 6,000 years.
Small denominations as a secure building block
Especially small denominations in gold and silver are among the most popular products for various emergency situations – both at home and abroad. They can easily be carried in a wallet while travelling without drawing attention, and are recognised worldwide as a means of exchange. This set thus combines the collector's joy of a genuine rarity with the security of physical gold. Gold is also exempt from VAT, and profits from its sale are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.
