A tool, not a piece of work: The minting die for the Big Five Lion 2025
Most collectors only know the end result that ends up in the capsule. This piece shows the other side of numismatics: a minting die for the 2025 lion design – solid, compact, made of stainless steel. The country of origin is Germany, and the item is listed under the manufacturer Kettner Edelmetalle, deliberately in the category of accessories or collector's utensils. Because here you're not buying a precious metal, but a piece of minting technology.
Those who collect coins usually collect strikes. Minting tools, on the other hand, almost always remain invisible: they are produced in small numbers, they work under enormous pressure, and as a rule they never leave the workshop. This is precisely where such a die derives its appeal – it is not another specimen of a mintage, but equipment.
What technically defines a minting die
During minting, a blank is placed between two dies and reshaped with many tons of force. The design sits recessed and mirror-inverted in the die; on the coin, it appears raised and correctly oriented. For the highest Proof minting quality, dies and blanks are additionally polished to a high gloss and struck multiple times – this creates the typical contrast between a mirrored field and a matte relief. With Brilliant Uncirculated (BU), on the other hand, clean, mint-fresh series quality is what counts, as known from bullion coins. Neither is possible without a flawless tool: the die determines the sharpness, depth, and quality of every single detail.
The addition "gilded" in the item name refers to the refined finish of the associated strike; according to the technical data, the die body itself is made of stainless steel. Information on denomination, diameter, and packaging is listed on the product page as "Various" – each tool is a one-of-a-kind piece and is delivered as new merchandise.
The design: the king of the savannah
The lion is the second design in the Big Five Series III from the South African Mint – the same mint that also issues the world-famous Krugerrand. The corresponding silver coin weighs one ounce, consists of 999 fine silver, carries a face value of 5 Rand, and measures 38.73 mm. The bullion edition in a blister was issued with a mintage of 15,000 pieces; the double-capsule Proof set was limited to just 1,000 pieces worldwide.
On the design side, a fully grown lion stands powerfully on a rock, with the mane and musculature finely detailed. The value side employs a clever trick: two halves of a lion portrait complete each other once several coins are placed side by side. Each of the three Big Five series follows the same sequence – elephant, lion, rhinoceros, leopard, buffalo. Series I began in 2019 with the elephant, Series II from 2021, Series III from 2024. With their strictly limited mintages, these silver coins are among the most sought-after modern animal series of all, and are additionally issued in gold, silver, and platinum.

Who this die is worth it for
For collectors who already have the Big Five in gold, silver, or platinum in their cabinet, this is the logical addition: coin and tool together tell the whole story of a strike. In the display case, the heavy steel body appears almost archaic next to the light ounce coin – and it is precisely this contrast that makes it a conversation piece. As a gift for numismatists with a fondness for technology, something like this is rare and therefore impactful.
A coin shows the design. A minting die shows how the design comes into being.
Minting die or coin – an honest comparison
- The die scores with rarity, technical character, and display impact. It has no precious metal content; its appeal is purely numismatic-documentary.
- The silver coin combines design and material value: one troy ounce of fine silver, traded worldwide and tradable at any time – classically suited for wealth preservation and crisis protection.
- Both together form a well-rounded collection: tool plus result, craftsmanship plus precious metal.
Precious metals have accompanied humanity for millennia; gold is the oldest currency in the world and has outlived every paper currency. Those who want to combine the joy of collecting with substance therefore like to place both side by side: the die as a testament to the art of minting – and the limited silver ounce as a tangible asset that has withstood inflation and currency turmoil for generations.
Handling, care, and storage
- Only handle with cotton gloves – skin oils leave marks on steel just as they do on silver.
- Store dry, dust-free, and at a stable temperature, ideally in a display case, case, or box.
- No aggressive agents, no scrubbing: a soft, dry cloth is completely sufficient.
Shipping is carried out as an insured value shipment – insured and discreetly packaged. Questions about the design, the series, or the right presentation? Our precious metals experts are happy to advise you personally and in detail.
