Some buildings you simply have to see at night. The Würzburg Residence is one of them. When the sandstone façade glows in the warm light of the floodlights, the Milky Way stretches across the roof, and the full moon stands above the Court of Honor, the baroque palace seems to belong to another era. This exact moment is captured by the 1 oz Silver Bavaria by Night – Würzburg Residence 2026. The coin belongs to the "Cities and Landscapes" series and is issued in a mintage of only 100 pieces.

✔ A Baroque Gem Beneath the Starry Sky

The obverse shows the magnificent main façade facing Residence Square. In front of it rises the Frankonia Fountain. Gabriel von Seidl and Ferdinand von Miller created it in 1894 in honor of Prince Regent Luitpold. At the very top stands the bronze figure of Frankonia, the allegory of Franconia, raising her flag into the night sky. At her feet sit three great Franconians: Walther von der Vogelweide, Tilman Riemenschneider, and Matthias Grünewald. At the left edge of the image, the white-and-blue diamond banner flutters, a charming detail underscoring the connection to Bavaria. Particularly appealing is the rain-slicked cobblestone pavement, in which every illuminated window is reflected.

The Residence was built starting in 1720 according to plans by Balthasar Neumann, as the seat of the Würzburg prince-bishops from the House of Schönborn. The Venetian Giovanni Battista Tiepolo painted the famous ceiling fresco above the staircase. Since 1981, the complex, together with the Court Garden and Residence Square, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is considered one of the most unified and extraordinary baroque palaces in Europe. Napoleon is even said to have called it the "most beautiful parsonage in Europe."

✔ The Garden Side: Court Garden in Shimmering Light

Turning the coin over reveals the Residence from a completely different angle. On the value side, bearing the face value of 20 Dollars and the coat of arms of Liberia, the garden façade with its striking, arched central section is depicted. An illuminated gravel path winds through well-tended flower beds, past white benches, cone-shaped trimmed trees, and a fountain. Above it stretches once again a deep blue, star-studded sky. Two views that together form a complete work of art.

✔ Artistic Finishing in Color and Gold

The coin owes its radiant effect to an elaborate finishing process carried out by a specialized company in Germany exclusively for Kettner Edelmetalle. The colorful coloring brings out night blue, violet, and the evening red at the horizon. The surrounding rim and the lettering are partially gold-plated, framing the design like a golden picture frame. The work is carried out with great precision, so that even the fine statues on the balustrade remain clearly recognizable. The manufacturer's statement refers to the coin itself, not to the finishing.

✔ Why 100 Pieces Make All the Difference

Only a very low mintage turns a coin into a true rarity. There are just 100 pieces worldwide, and many are interested: lovers of Bavaria, admirers of baroque architecture, and all those who collect finished silver coins. Due to this strict limitation, the piece has considerable potential for value appreciation. No one can guarantee this. However, the starting conditions are extremely attractive for collectors.

✔ Finished Collector's Coin or Classic Bullion Coin?

Classic bullion coins such as the Maple Leaf or the Vienna Philharmonic are minted in very large quantities, and their price closely follows the silver price. They are ideal if the metal itself is all that matters. The Würzburg Residence sets different priorities:

  • Rarity: 100 pieces instead of mintages in the millions
  • Design: a colorful design with gold accents instead of a plain strike
  • Collector's value: alongside the metal value, design, condition, and demand all matter
  • Good to know: the premium over the pure material value is higher, but in return you receive a small work of art with its own story

✔ Silver – A Metal with a Long Collecting Tradition

Silver has been minted into coins for thousands of years, and collectors treasure its unmistakable shine. The metal is durable and does not change its properties across generations. This makes it an excellent gift to pass on to children and grandchildren. Electronics, solar, and medical technology create strong demand for silver, which gives it additional intrinsic value. Compared to gold, it is more affordable and can be easily resold. Many buyers also view precious metals as an inflation hedge or as crisis protection. With this piece, however, the joy of collecting is the main focus. Under current German law, profits from the sale remain tax-free if you have held the coin for at least one year.
