When the lanterns light up along Ludwigstrasse and the moon rises over Schwabing, Munich reveals its most romantic side. This very moment is captured by the 1 oz Silver Bavaria by Night – Siegestor 2026. This vividly designed collector's coin from the "Cities and Landscapes" series combines Bavarian lifestyle with numismatic rarity. A piece for anyone who wants to display true eye-catchers rather than mass-produced items in their display case.

✔ The design: A landmark in moonlight

On the obverse, the Siegestor glows in warm, golden light. Every column, every relief, and the round medallions stand out in sharp relief, while the illumination is reflected in the rain-soaked cobblestones. Through the central arch, the view opens onto a lantern-lined avenue and a church spire in the distance. And above? A sky that transitions from the glowing violet and pink of the horizon into deep night blue, crossed by the shimmering band of the Milky Way. In the upper right, the full moon shines. Around the edge reads the inscription "1 OZ 9999 FINE SILVER 2026".

The reverse brings the quadriga into close focus. With a raised laurel wreath, Bavaria sits enthroned above four mighty, roaring lions, their manes rendered in the finest detail. Along the lower edge waves the white-and-blue diamond flag of the Free State, with Liberia's national coat of arms as the issuing country. To the side is the face value "20 DOLLARS".

✔ From triumphal arch to memorial: The history of the Siegestor

Around 1840, King Ludwig I commissioned his architect Friedrich von Gärtner to design a triumphal arch modeled on the Arch of Constantine in Rome. Built between 1843 and 1850, the structure forms the northern end of Ludwigstrasse – dedicated "To the Bavarian Army". To this day, it marks the border between Maxvorstadt and Schwabing. The special feature of the roughly 20-ton quadriga: Bavaria, modeled by Friedrich Brugger, is not drawn by horses but by four lions, created by Johann von Halbig. The lion is the heraldic animal of the Wittelsbach dynasty.

Heavily damaged in World War II, the gate was rebuilt starting in 1958; in 1972, the quadriga, restored by Elmar Dietz, returned to its original place. Since then, the city-facing side bears an inscription that still gives visitors pause today:

"Dedicated to victory, destroyed by war, calling for peace."

✔ Finishing with an eye for detail

What makes this edition so special is its artistic craftsmanship. The base coin, made of fine silver, is finished in Germany through multiple stages by a specialized partner company: brilliant coloring makes the night sky, lantern glow, and diamond pattern shine in rich colors. The partially gilded edge frames both designs like an elegant picture frame, with lettering and coats of arms also shimmering in gold. Applied with the utmost precision, every detail of the relief is preserved. The reeded edge, the Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition, and the protective capsule round out the overall picture. The manufacturer's attribution refers to the coin itself, not the finishing.

✔ Why 100 pieces make all the difference

Classic bullion coins such as the Maple Leaf or Krugerrand are issued year after year in mintages of a million pieces or more. Their advantage lies in the low premium and close proximity to the pure metal value. However, anyone wishing to combine art, history, and rarity in a single coin will find a far more exciting approach with limited silver coins like this one. A mintage of just 100 pieces is a bold statement even among finished collector's editions. This very low mintage ensures that only a few collectors worldwide can call an example their own. It is precisely this strict limitation that creates the appeal – and explains why designs with regional ties are so sought after by enthusiasts of Bavarian themes. A rarity that should not be missing from any Munich or Bavaria collection.

✔ Silver as a noble carrier metal

Even though the collector's value clearly takes center stage with this edition, the precious metal beneath it has its own timeless character.

  • Since antiquity, silver has been a prized coinage metal and a symbol of wealth and prestige
  • Profits from the sale of physical silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year
  • Growing demand from the electronics, solar, and medical technology sectors underscores the metal's intrinsic value
  • Silver is durable and retains its physical properties across generations

Classic inflation hedge and proven crisis protection are traditionally built into physical precious metals – with this coin, a welcome bonus on top of pure collecting pleasure.
