1/2 oz Silver Lunar III Goat 2027 – the eighth year of issue from Perth

Every twelve years each zodiac sign returns – in 2027 it's the turn of the Goat. The Perth Mint dedicates the eighth issue of the Silver Lunar Series III to it, once again offering it in six sizes, from the half ounce up to the 10-kilo colossus. The appeal of this issue lies exactly in between: the half ounce is the smallest and most manageable variant of the series – an ideal entry point into Australian silver coins and at the same time a collector's piece that fits into any display case.

  • Investment purpose: Bullion coin with inflation hedge properties, long-term value preservation and a small denomination for crisis protection
  • Design: Goat family in an idyllic mountain landscape, plum blossom branch, Chinese character for goat and the inscription "GOAT 2027"
  • Material & fineness: 15.55 g of pure silver at 999.9/1,000 – the highest fineness a bullion coin can offer
  • Manufacturer: the world-renowned mint Perth Mint, founded in 1899
  • Country of origin: Australia – legal tender with a face value of 0.50 AUD

Three goats bring luck: the design for the year 2027

The obverse tells a small story. A fully grown goat gazes attentively over a rocky landscape, a young animal stands beside it, and a third animal rests by the water. Behind them is the Chinese saying "Three Goats Bring Bliss" – a symbol for the end of winter, the beginning of spring, and an auspicious new start. The scene is complemented by a blossoming plum tree, which stands for purity, resilience and hope. Above the animals are the Chinese character for goat as well as the inscription GOAT 2027, and on the left edge the small "P" – the mint mark of the Perth Mint. The design was created by designer Natasha Muhl; her initials appear discreetly at the lower edge of the coin. The obverse also carries a micro-engraved security feature that is only visible under a magnifying glass and makes counterfeiting considerably more difficult.

The reverse shows the portrait of King Charles III, designed by Dan Thorne, surrounded by the inscriptions AUSTRALIA, 1/2 oz, 9999 Ag and 50 CENTS. This means weight, fineness and face value are struck directly into the metal – a detail that builds trust in trading worldwide.

Why the half ounce in particular?

The 1-ounce issue of the Lunar series is traditionally limited to a mintage of 300,000 pieces and is considered a classic. For the half ounce, however, the Perth Mint does not specify a fixed upper limit – minting takes place according to demand within the year of issue. Historically, though, actual mintage figures for the fractional ounces have turned out to be significantly lower than those of the full ounce, which has made older years of issue sought after among collectors. Anyone who already holds Krugerrand, Maple Leaf or Kookaburra coins adds something with this coin that those do not offer: an annually changing design instead of an unchanging, permanent one. And compared to the Lunar gold coins of the same year of issue, the entry point remains remarkably low.

Small denominations naturally carry a higher premium per gram than larger units – but in return you gain divisibility. Anyone who, in a worst-case scenario, wants to pass on or exchange value in small increments is more flexible with half ounces than with a kilo bar. Besides this Brilliant Uncirculated issue, the Goat also appears in Proof quality as well as in gold and platinum – however, the 1/2 oz in bullion quality remains the classic choice for a portfolio.

Gold is humanity's oldest currency and has outlived every paper currency. Silver is its little brother – tangible, divisible, and proven as a monetary metal for thousands of years.

Silver: a tangible asset with a dual foundation

Silver thrives on two sides of the same coin. There is the monetary tradition: for centuries it was the everyday coinage metal, a symbol of prosperity, a means of payment in daily trade. And there is the industrial reality: electronics, photovoltaics and medical technology consume silver permanently, often irretrievably. The supply from mining and recycling is finite, while the fields of application keep growing. It is precisely this combination that gives the metal an intrinsic value which – unlike fiat money – does not depend on trust in a central bank.

A tax note that interests many investors: profits from the sale of physical precious metals are generally tax-free in Germany, provided at least one year lies between purchase and sale. Physical silver is also liquid worldwide and can be converted into cash at any time. Whether as a gift for the Year of the Goat, as a building block of cross-generational wealth protection, or simply because you like the design: this coin is a piece of honest metal in the finest Australian minting quality. And it arrives with you protected in its original capsule – shipped with insured shipping, as befits precious metals.
