Some coins you look at. Others you experience. The Hummingbird ounce 2026 clearly belongs to the second category. Minted from a full ounce of silver with a fineness of 999.9/1,000, this new release transforms every ray of light into a sparkling play of facets. Among the silver coins of the 2026 vintage, it ranks among the most impressive new releases – and with a mintage of only 500 pieces, also among the rarest.

The prism effect: plumage like cut gemstones

What sets this silver coin apart from classic bird motifs is its design. Feathers and petals were not modeled soft and round, but broken down into small, angular surfaces – similar to the facets of a cut crystal. When light hits the relief, it refracts slightly differently on each of these surfaces. Turn the coin by just a few degrees and highlights travel across the head, chest and wings. The hummingbird seems to shimmer. And all without color: the effect is created solely through the minting in pure metal. Combined with the mirrored background of the Proof finish, this creates a contrast that photos can only hint at.

Two sides, two moments in the life of a hummingbird

On the value side, the bird hovers in its typical whirring flight in front of a wide-open flower. Its long, narrow beak dips deep into the calyx, the wings are spread, and dewdrops bead on the petals. The scene is completed by the inscriptions "20 DOLLARS" and "REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA" as well as a small coat of arms of Liberia. The design side shows the hummingbird at rest: it sits on a branch, framed by flowers and leaves, alongside the details "1OZ 9999 FINE SILVER" and the year of issue 2026.

It is no coincidence that this particular bird was chosen. Hummingbirds are considered acrobats of the air – they are the only birds capable of flying forward, sideways and even backward. During hovering flight, they beat their wings around 50 times per second. They are found exclusively in the Americas, from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego.

"Small, fast, shimmering and hard to grasp – the hummingbird is the ideal motif for a coin you rarely get to see."

What makes a silver coin in Proof quality so special

For Proof strikes, both the dies and the blanks are polished to a high shine. Striking is done with high pressure and usually multiple times. This creates mirror-smooth fields and razor-sharp contours, which fully unfold their effect especially with a delicate faceted motif. With a fine weight of 31.1 grams and a diameter of 40 mm, this 1-ounce coin offers ample surface for the finest details – from the beak to the tiny stamens of the flower.

Why collectors shouldn't hesitate long with the Hummingbird 2026

500 pieces. For the whole world. This very low mintage makes the Hummingbird a true rarity within the "Birds" series. Once the allocation is sold out, interested buyers are left only with the secondary market – where motif collectors, bird lovers and admirers of modern minting artistry meet.

  1. The limitation to 500 pieces ensures genuine exclusivity
  2. Prism effect on both sides as a visual highlight
  3. Highest minting quality Proof with mirrored field and finely structured relief
  4. A full ounce of fine silver with a 40 mm diameter
  5. Official legal tender of the Republic of Liberia with a face value of 20 Dollars
  6. Protective coin capsule for flawless storage

Hummingbird, Elephant or Maple Leaf? An honest comparison

Kettner Edelmetalle has already used the prism look with other animal motifs, for example with the Elephant 2026 with 1,000 pieces. The Hummingbird is only half as common. Classic bullion coins such as Silver Maple Leaf or Krugerrand are quite different: they are minted in very large quantities and are primarily suited for collecting troy ounces as affordably as possible. The Hummingbird appeals to a different audience. It combines metal value with numismatic appeal. The premium over the pure material value is higher – but in return you hold a small work of art with a genuine rarity factor in your hands. A care tip: the Proof surface is sensitive. It is best to leave the coin in its capsule and never touch it with bare fingers.

Silver – a metal with history and a future

For thousands of years, silver has served as a coinage metal, trading medium and symbol of prosperity. It is durable, retains its physical properties over generations and is therefore excellently suited as a family heirloom. At the same time, industrial demand is growing, for example in electronics, solar and medical technology, while supply remains limited. Many also value the white precious metal as a building block for their inflation hedge and crisis protection – with the Hummingbird, however, the joy of collecting is clearly the focus. A pleasant side effect: in Germany, profits from the sale of silver are tax-free after a holding period of more than one year. And compared to gold, silver remains significantly more affordable.

Whether as a gift for nature lovers or as a sparkling centerpiece of your own collection: secure one of the 500 pieces of this extraordinary prism strike while supplies last.
