The Royal Mint

380 Britannias in silver.

Open black master box with coin tubes, a single tube and a silver coin beside it

Philip Nathan’s Britannia

The sculptor created her in 1987 for a new bullion coin from The Royal Mint.

She wears a Corinthian helmet with a high crest, while her hair and robes flow to the left.

  1. The trident

She holds it with her arm outstretched. It stands for her connection with the sea.

  2. The shield

It bears the Union Flag and stands for protection.

  3. The olive branch

She holds it above the shield. It stands for peace.

Meaning as given by The Royal Mint, details from a product photo.

380 coins

A tube from The Royal Mint holds 19 of these coins, and each row stands for one tube.

From Hadrian to Charles III

  1. around119

    On Roman coins

Under Emperor Hadrian, Britannia appears on a coin for the first time: a woman on rocks, with a spear and a shield, and below her the word BRITANNIA.

  2. 1672

    Back on English coins

She returns on England’s first official copper coins, the halfpenny and the farthing, under Charles II. Tradition has it that Frances Stuart, a lady of the court, sat as her model.

  3. 1997

    The Britannia in silver

Ten years after the gold Britannia comes the silver one, with 958 parts per thousand of silver until 2012. As early as 1697, England had prescribed exactly this fineness for silverware, which was hallmarked with a seated Britannia.

  4. 2013

    In fine silver

Since then, the silver Britannia has been struck in fine silver.

  5. 2023

    The King’s portrait

According to The Royal Mint, the 2023 Britannia is the world’s first bullion coin to bear the official portrait of King Charles III. The sculptor Martin Jennings called it his smallest work.

The Royal Mint in Wales

Since 1975, The Royal Mint has struck coins only in Llantrisant in South Wales. Queen Elizabeth II had opened the first phase of the site on 17 December 1968.

By its own account, it looks back on a history of more than 1,100 years.

Every year, an independent jury tests the weight and fineness of its coins at Goldsmiths’ Hall in London, during the Trial of the Pyx.

“Steadfast in the eye of the storm.”

This is how The Royal Mint describes its Britannia.

In fine silver.

  • fineness 999
  • 22 mm
  • face value 50 pence

King Charles III on the Value Side

The obverse of these Brilliant Uncirculated silver coins features the impressive portrait of King Charles III in classic side profile. The inscription "CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 50 PENCE" grants the coin its official legitimacy as legal tender of the United Kingdom. A fine guilloché pattern in the background underscores the masterful minting artistry of the Royal Mint.

The Majestic Britannia – Symbol of British Strength

On the reverse, the iconic Britannia is enthroned in all her splendor. With flowing robes, the characteristic Corinthian helmet and her mighty trident, she has embodied Britain's naval power and unyielding spirit for centuries. The Union Jack on her shield and the elaborate wave lines in the background make each individual coin a small work of art. The inscription "BRITANNIA · 2026 · 1/4 OZ · 999 FINE SILVER" guarantees authenticity and purity.

Why This Masterbox Is a Smart Decision

The masterbox contains 380 individual coins, securely packed in practical coin tubes. This results in an impressive total fine weight of 2,956.4 grams of purest silver. But it's about more than just numbers.

Silver has outlasted every currency in history. It possesses an intrinsic value that endures independently of political decisions or economic turbulence.

The Advantages of the 1/4 Ounce Denomination

  1. Maximum flexibility: Smaller units can be sold or exchanged individually as needed
  2. Ideal medium of exchange: In times of crisis, convenient denominations are worth their weight in gold – or rather, in silver
  3. Perfect for gifting: Each coin makes an excellent gift of lasting value
  4. Tax advantage: After a one-year holding period, profits from sale are generally tax-free

Industrial Demand Is Driving the Market

Silver has long been more than just a precious metal for investors and collectors. Industry consumes enormous quantities every year – from electronics to solar technology to medicine. This steadily growing demand, coupled with limited supply, creates an exciting environment for long-term oriented investors.
