Some coins you buy. Others you discover. The African Big Five Silver Set 2026 clearly belongs to the second category: two partially gilded ounces in the finest minting quality, united in an elegant case and limited to a mintage of just 30 pieces. Anyone wishing to add a true highlight to their Silver Big Five collection will find here an ensemble that has hardly any equal among current silver coins.

Two Icons of the Savannah: The Design in Detail

The first ounce depicts a leopard rising snarling from the tall savannah grass. Its mouth wide open, one paw raised, its tail elegantly curved. A scene full of tension! Its spotted coat is gilded and stands out dramatically against the mirror-polished, deep-dark coin field.

The second coin is dedicated to the Big Five rhinoceros. The colossus strides frontally towards the viewer, its body relief entirely in gold, while the two horns are deliberately left in silver. A sophisticated contrast. Both designs are framed by a surrounding ornament of diamonds and X-shapes, whose tribal pattern recalls African textile art. The inscriptions "LEOPARD" and "RHINOCEROS" as well as "AFRICAN BIG FIVE 2026" clearly assign each silver coin to the series.

The Reverse Side: All Five Animals United

On the reverse side, the Big Five lion, leopard, rhinoceros, buffalo and elephant come together in a densely composed group portrait. Here too, the leopard and rhinoceros carry gold plating, while the lion, elephant and buffalo shine in pure silver brilliance. Added to this are the inscriptions "1 OZ FINE SILVER 9999" and "Republic of Liberia", the Liberian coat of arms, and the face value "20 DOLLARS". A gilded, reeded edge completes each coin.

Presentation in a Case

The duo is delivered in a black case. Its inner lid depicts an African evening scene: a leopard resting on a branch, next to it a rhinoceros standing before a glowing horizon. This turns the set into a showpiece for display cabinet or safe, with no standard blister pack or double capsule required.

Why This Edition Is a True Rarity

The regular African Big Five edition from Liberia in Proof quality is issued with 1,000 pieces per design. For collectors, that alone is already a manageable number. However, this partially gilded set variant goes a tremendous step further: only 30 pieces worldwide. Such a rarity rarely appears on the secondary market, and whoever arrives too late is usually left empty-handed.

This very low mintage, combined with two of Africa's most popular animal designs, gives the set a high appreciation potential. How the collector's price develops will ultimately be determined by supply and demand. However, the conditions could hardly be better.

Comparison: Set, Single Coin, or Classic Big Five?

  • Liberia single coins in Proof: Same reverse side, but without partial gilding and with a significantly higher mintage. Ideal for completing the series.

  • Big Five from the South African Mint: The well-known 5-Rand series, usually in Brilliant Uncirculated with five-digit mintages. A good entry point into the theme.

  • This set: Two designs, gold refinement, case, and a limitation to 30 pieces. The most exclusive way to own a leopard and a rhinoceros.

Exclusivity naturally comes at a price: with such a tiny mintage, the premium noticeably exceeds the pure silver value. In return, collectors receive a collector's coin as a double pack that cannot simply be reordered at will.

Proof Quality: Mirror Finish Meets Gold

For minting in Proof quality, blanks and dies are elaborately polished. Each coin is produced individually, with multiple strikes. The result is a mirrored field from which the matte relief emerges in striking three-dimensional detail. The selective gilding crowns the whole piece. Our tip: handle the coins with gloves whenever possible, as fingerprints diminish their condition.

Silver as a Lasting Tangible Asset

Behind the collector's appeal lies genuine precious metal. Silver has accompanied mankind for millennia as a coinage metal and is regarded in many cultures as a symbol of prosperity. Today it is also needed in electronics, photovoltaics and medical technology, all amid limited supply. Many also value the white metal as an inflation hedge and as a building block for personal crisis protection. A pleasant side effect: in Germany, profits from the sale of physical silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.

Two ounces of fine silver, two golden icons of the savannah, 30 sets worldwide: a set that you don't just own, but love to show off.
