Deutsche Mark · 2026 Edition

The coin that passed through our hands for half a century. When memory turns to silver.

Value side with the large One between two oak twigs and the lettering Deutsche MarkReverse with the eagle

You are looking at the value side.

It jingled in coat pockets, lay on shop counters and in piggy banks. The One between the oak twigs went through millions of hands until the farewell of the D-Mark. Now its image returns as a homage, struck in fine silver.

  • Mintage 250 pieces
  • Reverse Proof
  • 31.1 g

It was never just money. It was a promise.

On 20 June 1948, every resident of the three western zones exchanged 40 Reichsmarks for 40 D-Marks, the “Kopfgeld” or per-head quota. The very next day, shop windows were full to bursting. The new currency set off the economic miracle.

In the Bundesbank’s words, the D-Mark enjoyed trust from its first day and kept it to the very end. Over five decades it also became an international symbol of stable money.

12 billion

Some never fully let go of it: according to the Bundesbank, around twelve billion D-Marks have still not been exchanged, more than half of them in coins.

From the Kopfgeld to the farewell

Half a century of the Mark

  1. 1948

    A new beginning

On 20 June the currency reform takes effect. From the next day, the Deutsche Mark is the only legal tender in the three western zones.

  2. 1950

The One with the oak leaves

At the end of 1950 the one-mark coin enters circulation, designed by Josef Bernhart of Munich. Its motif remains unchanged until the farewell of the D-Mark.

  3. 1951

    The Heiermann

Albert Holl’s silver five-mark coin is struck for the first time and circulates from May 1952. It remains the only circulation coin of the Federal Republic made of silver.

  4. 1957

    The Bundesbank

On 1 August the Deutsche Bundesbank takes over from the Bank deutscher Länder, which had issued the first D-Marks in 1948.

  5. 1990

    One Mark for everyone

“If the D-Mark comes, we stay. If it doesn’t, we’ll go to it” was a slogan at the Monday demonstrations. On 1 July 1990 it came to the GDR, even before German reunification.

  6. 2001

    The farewell

In farewell, the Deutsche Bundesbank issues the One as a gold coin, one million pieces in fine gold. Since 1 January 2002 Germans have paid in euros.

The motif

An image everyone knows

The value side follows the one-mark coin of the past. Anyone who once held the Mark recognises it at once.

Value side with the large One between two oak twigs and the lettering Deutsche Mark
Reverse with the eagle
The large One
Clear and unadorned, it stands in the centre, just as on the one-mark coin designed by the Munich artist Josef Bernhart.
Two oak twigs
To the left and right, two oak twigs with acorns frame the numeral. Oak leaves already graced the pfennig coins, and the German 1, 2 and 5 cent coins still show them today.
The eagle
On the other side the eagle spreads its wings, worked down to the last feather. The wings carry the face value and Republic of Liberia in small letters.

The finish

Two ways to catch the light

Proof

The field shines deep like a mirror, the motif lies on it in matte relief. With this finish, dies and blanks are specially polished and the blanks are fed into the press one by one.

Your coinReverse Proof

Reverse Proof

Here it is the other way round: the field is frosted, the motif gleams like a mirror. Every leaf vein and every feather catches the light.

Some things pass.

The memory remains.

The D-Mark is history. Its image in precious metal remains, for you and for those you will one day pass it on to.

250

pieces in the edition

31.1 g fine silver · 999,9/1.000 · 40 mm · Reverse Proof · Coin capsule

An own edition by Kettner Edelmetalle, not an issue of the Federal Republic of Germany or the Deutsche Bundesbank. The issuing country is the Republic of Liberia, hence the face value in dollars.

Deutsche Mark Privy Mark 2026: Cult Design in 999.9 Fine Silver – Only 250 Pieces

  • Strictly limited: A very low mintage of only 250 pieces worldwide – a re-strike is not planned.
  • Growth potential: High value appreciation potential, as a very low mintage meets lively demand for D-Mark designs.
  • Rarity: An exceptionally rare collector's coin that is unlikely to come to market a second time in this form.
  • Collecting goal: A piece of German monetary history that, thanks to its strict limitation, can become the centerpiece of a D-Mark collection.
  • Design: The legendary denomination "1" between two oak branches with acorns, complemented by the fine Privy Mark "25 Years Farewell" – on the reverse a powerfully modeled eagle.
  • Minting quality: Reverse Proof with mirror-shine relief on a silky matte background, securely packaged in a coin capsule.
  • Manufacturer: Kettner Edelmetalle.
  • Country of origin: Germany – issued as an official coin of the Republic of Liberia with a face value of 20 Dollars.

Some designs need no explanation. Practically everyone in Germany who experienced the years before 2002 recognizes the plain "1" between two oak branches. This very image is featured on the 1 oz silver Deutsche Mark Privy Mark 2026 – though not in copper-nickel, but in a full ounce of fine silver: 999.9/1,000 fineness, 40.00 mm diameter, 31.1 g fine weight.

The Design: Oak Leaves, Eagle, and a Privy Mark with Meaning

The design of the historic 1-DM coin was created by Josef Bernhart; the coin was minted from 1950 to 2001. The value side shows the denomination "1," flanked by two oak branches each bearing an acorn, with the inscription DEUTSCHE MARK below. The 2026 re-strike adopts this sober, almost austere design language – and adds a detail that immediately catches collectors' attention: the small, round Privy Mark bearing the inscription "25 Years" and "Farewell." It serves as a reminder that D-Mark cash lost its status as legal tender at the end of December 31, 2001. In 2026, this farewell marks a quarter century.

The second side belongs to the eagle. It is rendered noticeably more three-dimensional and detailed than the historical model: finely feathered wings, powerful talons, sharp edges. The inscription reads "1 OUNCE 9999 FINE SILVER," along with the face value 20 DOLLARS, the issuing country Republic of Liberia, and again DEUTSCHE MARK. A beaded border and reeded edge round off the classic appearance of this silver coin.

Reverse Proof: The Reversed Mirror Finish

In a standard Proof finish, the background shines while the relief remains matte. Reverse Proof reverses this principle. Here, the mirror shine lies on the relief, while the surface shimmers in silky matte. The effect is striking: the denomination, oak leaves, and eagle plumage seem to emerge from the coin as if illuminated. Such surfaces are created using specially prepared dies, are delicate, and are therefore almost always available only in small quantities. It is best to handle the piece only by the capsule or the edge, so its condition remains untouched for decades to come.

Why 250 Pieces Are a Different League

Classic bullion coins such as the Maple Leaf or Silver Krugerrand are produced in mintages of millions – excellent when it's purely about fine silver at a slim premium. This issue plays in a different league. Distribute 250 pieces among collectors in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and the math quickly gets tight. Even the 2026 sister edition without the Privy Mark was issued in a higher quantity, and the design is also available in gold with even smaller mintages. Scarcity is not a marketing term for this issue – it is the defining product feature.

Rarity is the collector's currency – and a mintage of only 250 pieces cannot be increased after the fact.

The advantage over pure bullion strikes lies in the numismatic appeal: design history, Privy Mark, extremely small mintage, and Reverse Proof finish combine to create a collector's item with its own aura and corresponding value appreciation potential. The price for this is a premium over the pure material value – those who wish solely to stack ounces are better served by standard products. Those who collect broadly like to combine the Deutsche Mark with other silver coins of German minting artistry, such as the Germania or the newly minted Silver Mark issues.

For Collectors, Nostalgics, and Gift-Givers

Silver has been a coinage metal for centuries and is valued by collectors for its aesthetics: it can be finely modeled, displays contrasts brilliantly, and retains its physical properties across generations. Added to this is the real material value, as the metal is traded worldwide as a commodity and is permanently needed in electronics, solar, and medical technology – amid limited availability. The market is correspondingly liquid, with buying and selling handled through established dealers. For private individuals, profits from the sale of silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. This general information does not replace individual tax advice.

As a gift for a milestone birthday or company anniversary, this rarity is a perfect hit, as it unites memory and tangible asset in one piece – especially for generations who grew up with the D-Mark. Those wishing to further diversify their precious metals holdings will also find products for inflation protection and crisis protection at Kettner Edelmetalle. However, the clear focus of this issue is the collector. And with only 250 pieces available, one should not deliberate for too long.
