Summer and autumn · The red deer
Every year it grows a new set of antlers.
Between February and April the red deer sheds its antlers, and after about 140 days the new ones have grown. Until then a hair-covered skin, the velvet, supplies them with nutrients.
In early September the rut begins in Central Europe. It lasts five to six weeks, and the stags roar loudly.
For most of the year red deer live in herds. Maternal family groups often join together to form one herd, and the lead hind always has a calf. Red deer were originally at home in open, steppe-like landscapes.
The red deer is the largest deer species found regularly in Germany.
