Mouse, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Most Lunar coins feature exactly one animal at their center. This time, the Perth Mint brings the entire Chinese zodiac together on a surface of 50 millimeters. The result is a colorful, playful and yet symbol-rich composition. Among the silver coins of the 2026 vintage, it therefore holds a special position.

Twelve Little Lucky Charms Around Yin and Yang

According to legend, the emperor once summoned all the animals of the earth to a great race. The twelve fastest were given their permanent place in the lunar calendar. Since then, each of them has represented one year in the twelve-year cycle and, according to ancient belief, is said to shape the character and fate of people born in that year.

Designer Ing Ing Jong has drawn the animals as cheerful babies. They frolic in a circle across the coin's field, set against a finely engraved background of stylized clouds, a lake and a temple. The color stands out vividly against the mirrored background. At the center lies a Bagua, deliberately left uncolored and matte: eight Taoist trigrams representing the interplay of Yin and Yang. Right at the very center sits the Taijitu, the well-known Yin-Yang symbol. It represents the unity of opposites and the fact that they depend on one another.

This design does not celebrate a single birth year. It includes every viewer, since everyone finds their own zodiac sign on it.

This makes the coin an excellent gift as well, for example for a birth, a christening, or the Chinese New Year festival.

The Value Side: King Charles III for Tuvalu

On the reverse side, the coin shows the portrait of King Charles III based on a design by Jody Clark. His initials "JC" can clearly be seen below the neckline. Around the edge are the words KING CHARLES III and TUVALU, along with the details 3oz, 9999 Ag, the minting year 2026 and the face value of 3 DOLLARS. The coin is therefore official legal tender of the island nation of Tuvalu and was minted in Australia.

A Rarity with a Clear Limitation

Of the "Twelve Lunar Baby Animals" in three ounces, there are only 500 pieces. By comparison: the classic 1-ounce coins of the Australian Lunar Series III in Proof quality are issued by the Perth Mint with a limit of 5,000 pieces – ten times as many. Such a very low mintage meets a design that is equally popular among Lunar collectors in Asia and Europe. This makes the edition a true rarity. Once the allotted quantity is sold out, only the secondary market remains.

Many collectors buy silver Lunar coins from the Perth Mint year after year, animal by animal. For them, this edition is the ideal complement, as it unites the complete cycle in a single piece. Incidentally, the mint, founded in 1899 in Western Australia, became famous not only for its Lunar series but also for classics such as Kangaroo and Koala.

Advantages Over the Classic 1-Ounce Lunar Coins

  • More room for detail: 50 mm diameter provides space for twelve animals along with their symbolism
  • Timeless design: Remains relevant regardless of the current lunar year
  • Significantly scarcer: Only a tenth of the mintage of the 1-ounce Proof edition of Lunar III
  • Trade-off: The entry price is higher than for a 1-ounce coin. In return, you get three times the amount of silver and a far more exclusive edition

Proof Quality to Perfection

Minting in Proof is the most demanding quality in coin production. Struck multiple times with polished dies, it creates a mirrored background against which matte reliefs and colored areas stand out with striking contrast. Fingerprints would dull this shine. It is therefore best to keep the coin in its case and handle it only with cotton gloves.

It comes in an elegant black case, together with a numbered certificate of authenticity from the Perth Mint.

Why Silver Has Fascinated Collectors for Centuries

Silver has been a coinage metal for thousands of years and was considered in many cultures a symbol of wealth and prestige. It is durable and retains its properties across generations. Due to its role in electronics, solar and medical technology, it is also a globally sought-after raw material with intrinsic value. Compared to gold, it is often significantly more affordable. This benefits collectors especially in the case of large-format collector coins like this one.

Many investors value the precious metal as an inflation hedge or rely on small denominations for crisis protection. This edition deliberately plays in a different league. Here, what matters is the design, minting quality and the mintage of only 500 pieces, with the silver content forming the solid foundation. Good to know: in Germany, profits from the sale of precious metals are generally tax-free for private individuals after a holding period of at least one year.
