Golden Eagle 2026, 1 ounce of fine silver, reverse

On the reverse the golden eagle perches on a gnarled branch with oak leaves, and on the obverse it lands with its wings raised high. Its time of the year is late winter, when the breeding season begins.

Late winter · The golden eagle

In early February its breeding season begins.

In Germany the golden eagle lives only in the Bavarian Alps. There its breeding season begins in early February, and eggs are laid from late February.

It usually builds its eyrie on smaller cliff faces, sometimes in trees as well, and each pair can have several alternate nests. It advertises its territory with undulating display flights.

It hunts mainly at the tree line and above.

In the monitoring by Berchtesgaden National Park, covering more than 1,500 km² between the Inn and the Salzach, no change of partner was documented in the 15 occupied territories in 2024.

Golden Eagle 2026 in Proof: The King of the Alps as a Strictly Limited Rarity

  • Strictly limited: Very low mintage of only 500 pieces worldwide
  • Growth opportunities: Very high value appreciation potential due to the strict limitation and strong demand for birds-of-prey designs
  • Rarity: A rare collector's coin, the kind found in only a few display cases
  • Investment goal: An exclusive collector's piece that, thanks to its limited mintage, carries high value appreciation potential
  • Minting quality: The highest possible minting quality "Proof" (PP) with mirrored background and frosted relief
  • Design: Two views of the Golden Eagle: perched alertly on an oak branch and in full landing approach with wings spread wide
  • Manufacturer: Exclusive minting by Kettner Edelmetalle
  • Country of origin: Germany, issued for the Republic of Liberia with a face value of 20 dollars

Majestic, unapproachable, rare: these three words describe the Golden Eagle, and they fit this collector's coin just as well. Kettner Edelmetalle has minted one of Europe's most powerful birds of prey onto a full ounce of silver. The coin weighs 31.1 grams, has a fineness of 999.9/1,000, and measures 40.00 millimeters in diameter. On top of that comes a mintage of just 500 pieces. Whoever owns one of these specimens holds a genuine rarity in their hands.

The Obverse: Alert on the Oak Branch

It sits calmly. The Golden Eagle looks to the right in profile. Its hooked beak, sharply defined eye, and pronounced brow ridge lend it the fierce character for which this hunter is known. Every covert feather, every wing feather, and every tail feather was individually modeled. The scaled talons with their long claws grip a gnarled, bark-covered branch. Oak branches extend into the image from the left, their leaf veins visible to the naked eye. Along the right edge runs the inscription "1 OZ 9999 FINE SILVER," with the year 2026 below.

Eagle and oak have stood for strength and permanence for centuries. Rarely do they appear as naturally united as here.

The Reverse: Wings at Full Span

The other side shows movement. The Golden Eagle, with wings raised high and spread wide, prepares to land on a branch, head turned to the left and talons already poised to grasp. The primary and secondary feathers fan out individually. These details reveal their full impact especially in angled light. Along the left edge is the face value "20 DOLLARS." A finely reeded edge completes the coin.

Why the Golden Eagle?

Aquila chrysaetos, called the "Golden Eagle" in English, owes its name to its golden-yellow nape. Females reach a wingspan of up to 230 centimeters. Its eyes are legendary: it can spot prey from roughly a kilometer away. In Germany, the Golden Eagle now breeds only in the Bavarian Alps. NABU counts just 44 to 46 breeding pairs there. A bird so rare in the wild fits perfectly on a coin with such a small mintage.

Proof: The Pinnacle of Minting

For Proof quality, dies and blanks are elaborately polished, and each piece is then struck with special care. This creates the characteristic contrast: the background shines like a mirror and appears almost black depending on the light, while the frosted design stands out in relief. The image changes with every turn in the hand. The coin capsule reliably protects the sensitive surface, so the coin should ideally remain inside it. A single fingerprint alone can harm its flawless quality.

What the Limitation Means for Collectors

500 specimens for collectors around the world. This number deserves real consideration. Classic bullion coins such as the American Eagle or the Krugerrand are issued in enormous quantities. Their great advantage is easy tradability, but their value is determined almost exclusively by the metal price. A mintage with a very low mintage takes a different path. Here, design, quality, and rarity all matter equally. Even the 2025 Golden Eagle issue still had a mintage of 5,000 pieces, ten times as many.

This limitation will not be increased afterward. Once all the coins have reached collectors, they usually remain there for a long time. This is the source of the value appreciation potential that enthusiasts of low-mintage pieces like this one appreciate.

It is not the precious metal alone that makes a coin special. What matters is how design, minting quality, and rarity come together, and with the Golden Eagle 2026, all three align perfectly.

Silver: A Metal for Collectors for Millennia

Even in antiquity, silver served as a coinage metal and a symbol of wealth. It is durable and in demand worldwide as a raw material, for example in electronics, solar technology, and medical technology. Many collectors and investors therefore value silver coins as a tangible asset with intrinsic value. Anyone who, alongside their collection, is also thinking about inflation hedge or crisis protection will find suitable additions at Kettner Edelmetalle. In Germany, profits from the sale of physical silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.
