The Royal Mint

150 Britannias in silver.

Coin tubes and stacks of silver coins, a single Britannia in front of them

Philip Nathan’s Britannia

The sculptor created her in 1987 for a new bullion coin from The Royal Mint.

She wears a Corinthian helmet with a high crest, while her hair and robes flow to the left.

  1. The trident

She holds it with her arm outstretched. It stands for her connection with the sea.

  2. The shield

It bears the Union Flag and stands for protection.

  3. The olive branch

She holds it above the shield. It stands for peace.

Meaning as given by The Royal Mint, details from a product photo.

150 coins

A tube from The Royal Mint holds 25 of these coins, and each row stands for one tube.

Since the 2021 issue

Four features you can see in the light

Turn the coin in the light and you can check that it is genuine. According to The Royal Mint, this makes the Britannia one of the most visually secure bullion coins in the world.

  • The latent image

At the bottom left, below the robes, it alternates between a trident and a padlock depending on the viewing angle.

  • The micro-text

DECUS ET TUTAMEN, an ornament and a safeguard, runs around the figure. The words already appeared on the edge of English coins in the 17th century.

  • The waves

When the coin is turned, waves seem to move behind the figure. To create them, a picosecond laser makes indentations which, according to The Royal Mint, are 200 times narrower than a human hair.

  • The lines in the shield

Fine, smooth lines trace the light and dark tones of the flag.

From Hadrian to Charles III

  1. around119

    On Roman coins

Under Emperor Hadrian, Britannia appears on a coin for the first time: a woman on rocks, with a spear and a shield, and below her the word BRITANNIA.

  2. 1672

    Back on English coins

She returns on England’s first official copper coins, the halfpenny and the farthing, under Charles II. Tradition has it that Frances Stuart, a lady of the court, sat as her model.

  3. 1997

    The Britannia in silver

Ten years after the gold Britannia comes the silver one, with 958 parts per thousand of silver until 2012. As early as 1697, England had prescribed exactly this fineness for silverware, which was hallmarked with a seated Britannia.

  4. 2013

    In fine silver

Since then, the silver Britannia has been struck in fine silver.

  5. 2023

    The King’s portrait

According to The Royal Mint, the 2023 Britannia is the world’s first bullion coin to bear the official portrait of King Charles III. The sculptor Martin Jennings called it his smallest work.

The Royal Mint in Wales

Since 1975, The Royal Mint has struck coins only in Llantrisant in South Wales. Queen Elizabeth II had opened the first phase of the site on 17 December 1968.

By its own account, it looks back on a history of more than 1,100 years.

Every year, an independent jury tests the weight and fineness of its coins at Goldsmiths’ Hall in London, during the Trial of the Pyx.

“Steadfast in the eye of the storm.”

This is how The Royal Mint describes its Britannia.

In fine silver.

  • fineness 999
  • 38.61 mm
  • face value 2 pounds

Fineness, diameter and face value per coin as stated by The Royal Mint.

Why Invest in Silver Right Now?

Silver is currently experiencing a renaissance as an investment metal. Industrial demand is virtually exploding – particularly in forward-looking sectors such as solar technology, electronics and medical technology. At the same time, supply remains limited. This constellation creates enormous potential for long-term appreciation in value.

"Silver is not just a precious metal – it is an indispensable raw material of the future and at the same time one of humanity's oldest currencies."

The Britannia 2026 – More Than Just a Coin

Each individual coin in this set bears the portrait of King Charles III, representing the fourth issue under his reign. The history of the Britannia figure, however, reaches much further back: the Romans first struck her on their coins as early as 119 AD. Since 1987, she has graced the modern bullion coin and has become one of the most sought-after designs worldwide.

  1. Historical significance: Britannia has symbolised British identity for over 1,900 years
  2. International recognition: Globally valued for quality and recognition
  3. Tax advantages: Gains are tax-free after a one-year holding period
  4. High liquidity: Easily tradeable at any time thanks to global acceptance

Technical Perfection Meets Timeless Elegance

With a diameter of 38.60 mm and a thickness of 3.00 mm, each coin sits perfectly in the hand. The milled edge not only ensures comfortable handling, but also serves as an additional security feature. The Brilliant Uncirculated quality guarantees that you receive coins in immaculate condition – directly from the renowned Royal Mint.

The inscription "BRITANNIA" and "1 oz .999 FINE SILVER" unambiguously documents the value of each individual coin. With a face value of 2 GBP per piece, it constitutes official legal tender of the United Kingdom – further proof of the credibility of this investment.
