The Royal Mint

375 Britannias in silver.

Coin tubes and stacks of silver coins, a single Britannia in front of them

Philip Nathan’s Britannia

The sculptor created her in 1987 for a new bullion coin from The Royal Mint.

She wears a Corinthian helmet with a high crest, while her hair and robes flow to the left.

  1. The trident

She holds it with her arm outstretched. It stands for her connection with the sea.

  2. The shield

It bears the Union Flag and stands for protection.

  3. The olive branch

She holds it above the shield. It stands for peace.

Meaning as given by The Royal Mint, details from a product photo.

375 coins

A tube from The Royal Mint holds 25 of these coins, and each row stands for one tube.

Since the 2021 issue

Four features you can see in the light

Turn the coin in the light and you can check that it is genuine. According to The Royal Mint, this makes the Britannia one of the most visually secure bullion coins in the world.

  • The latent image

At the bottom left, below the robes, it alternates between a trident and a padlock depending on the viewing angle.

  • The micro-text

DECUS ET TUTAMEN, an ornament and a safeguard, runs around the figure. The words already appeared on the edge of English coins in the 17th century.

  • The waves

When the coin is turned, waves seem to move behind the figure. To create them, a picosecond laser makes indentations which, according to The Royal Mint, are 200 times narrower than a human hair.

  • The lines in the shield

Fine, smooth lines trace the light and dark tones of the flag.

From Hadrian to Charles III

  1. around119

    On Roman coins

Under Emperor Hadrian, Britannia appears on a coin for the first time: a woman on rocks, with a spear and a shield, and below her the word BRITANNIA.

  2. 1672

    Back on English coins

She returns on England’s first official copper coins, the halfpenny and the farthing, under Charles II. Tradition has it that Frances Stuart, a lady of the court, sat as her model.

  3. 1997

    The Britannia in silver

Ten years after the gold Britannia comes the silver one, with 958 parts per thousand of silver until 2012. As early as 1697, England had prescribed exactly this fineness for silverware, which was hallmarked with a seated Britannia.

  4. 2013

    In fine silver

Since then, the silver Britannia has been struck in fine silver.

  5. 2023

    The King’s portrait

According to The Royal Mint, the 2023 Britannia is the world’s first bullion coin to bear the official portrait of King Charles III. The sculptor Martin Jennings called it his smallest work.

The Royal Mint in Wales

Since 1975, The Royal Mint has struck coins only in Llantrisant in South Wales. Queen Elizabeth II had opened the first phase of the site on 17 December 1968.

By its own account, it looks back on a history of more than 1,100 years.

Every year, an independent jury tests the weight and fineness of its coins at Goldsmiths’ Hall in London, during the Trial of the Pyx.

“Steadfast in the eye of the storm.”

This is how The Royal Mint describes its Britannia.

In fine silver.

  • fineness 999
  • 38.61 mm
  • face value 2 pounds

Fineness, diameter and face value per coin as stated by The Royal Mint.

A Monument of British Minting Art Meets Modern Wealth Protection

The Silver Britannia 2026 embodies more than just a bullion coin. It is a piece of living history! The majestic figure of Britannia, regarded since Roman times as the personification of Great Britain, watches over your investment. With flowing robes, she stands powerfully before the waves of the sea – a symbol of permanence in stormy times.

Each of the 375 silver coins is delivered in practical coin tubes of 25 pieces each. The high-quality white plastic tubes with grey screw caps guarantee optimal protection against environmental influences. This preserves the flawless Brilliant Uncirculated condition for years to come – a decisive factor for performance!

Why Invest in Silver Right Now?

Industrial demand for silver is virtually exploding! Whether in electronics, solar technology or medicine – the white precious metal is urgently needed everywhere. At the same time, natural deposits are limited. This combination creates enormous appreciation potential. Particularly pleasing: after a holding period of just one year, your profits from the sale of silver are completely tax-free!

"Silver is not just a precious metal – it is a bridge between industrial innovation and timeless value stability. The Britannia series combines the best of both worlds."

Technical Perfection Meets Historical Heritage

With a diameter of 38.60 mm and a thickness of 3.00 mm, each coin sits perfectly in the hand. The fine weight of exactly 31.1035 grams per ounce – a total of an impressive 11,662.50 grams of pure silver – makes this set a weighty cornerstone of your wealth protection. The face value of 2 GBP per coin underscores its official status as legal tender of the United Kingdom.

The fourth issue featuring the portrait of King Charles III marks a historic turning point. Collectors particularly value such transitional years of issue, as they document contemporary history. The finely crafted edge lettering and the detailed surface structures bear witness to the highest minting artistry.

Your Personal Crisis Protection in Times of Uncertainty

While paper money gradually loses its value through inflation, silver retains its intrinsic value. It is crisis-proof, inflation-protected and recognised worldwide as an investment. In smaller denominations such as the 1-ounce coin, it remains highly liquid – you can flexibly sell parts of your holdings at any time without having to touch the entire investment.

  1. Diversification par excellence: Silver barely correlates with traditional asset classes
  2. Cross-generational value preservation: Physical silver survives every currency reform
  3. High liquidity: Britannia coins are known and sought after worldwide
  4. Aesthetic pleasure: The artistic design makes every coin a collector's piece

The Royal Mint – Guarantor of the Highest Quality Since 886 AD
