The leopard’s coat suits its life in trees, in the forest and at night. Among the Big Five, the leopard is known as the elusive one.

The leopard

From the desert to the rainforest

  • Desert
  • Mountain forest
  • Rainforest

No other big cat is as widespread: leopards live in some 62 countries across Africa and Eurasia, in deserts, savannas, mountains and rainforests.

They prefer rocky ground with dense bush and riverine forest. The leopard climbs well, spends much of its time in trees and is mostly active at night, as a loner.

Its coat carries dark, irregular spots, the rosettes; the base colour ranges from pale yellow in warm, dry regions to reddish orange in dense forests. Instead of purring, it calls with a rough, rasping sound.

The cheetah

The only one of its genus

Its genus, Acinonyx, has no other living member today. The cheetah needs wide, open land and is mostly active by day, unlike many other cats.

Its coat carries solid, round or oval black spots from 1.9 to 3.8 centimetres; only the throat and belly stay white. The tail ends in four to six black rings.

Cheetahs do not roar; their most common call is a chirp. Females live alone, while males often join up in groups.

Why two patterns

The coat often suits where the cat lives

  • Rosettes in a leopard’s coat, detail of a coin

    Rosette

    For trees, forest and night.

  • Solid spots in a cheetah’s coat, detail of a coin

    Spot

    Black, without a ring.

A study of 35 cat species shows that whether a coat is patterned is linked to the habitat. How intricate and irregular the pattern is also relates to life in trees and to activity at night.

Over the course of evolution, such camouflage adapts comparatively quickly to a way of life. In the grey grass where cheetahs often live, their spots can take up the shadows of the blades and let the animals merge with their surroundings.

Rare coats

A black panther can be a leopard

Leopards with melanism, that is with almost black fur, are often called black panthers. Black cheetahs, by contrast, are not known.

In the rare king cheetah, the spots merge into blotches and stripes. It is not a species of its own but carries a rare variant of the gene Taqpep, which shapes the variations of the tabby pattern in domestic cats.

Young cheetahs wear a coat of their own as well: a thick, silvery grey mantle along the back, which they shed at about three months of age.

Big Five · South Africa

Two coins, one face

The motif side shows the leopard with the coat of arms below it, together with SOUTH AFRICA, BIG FIVE and the year. The other side divides the face: only two coins side by side make a whole portrait.

Place many coins next to each other and a whole row of faces appears. Today, Big Five means the five animals that wildlife lovers and safari guests want to see in the wild.

1 oz Silver Big Five III – Leopard 2026: Africa's Most Elegant Hunter in Pure Silver

  • Strictly limited: Only 10,000 pieces minted worldwide
  • Appreciation potential: High collector potential due to extremely low mintage
  • Rare collectible: 4th design of the sought-after Big Five Series III
  • Investment goal: Bullion coin with inflation hedge and long-term value preservation
  • Design: Majestic leopard in a lifelike representation – on the reverse a split close-up portrait
  • Material & fineness: 31.10 g of the purest silver in 999/1,000 fineness
  • Manufacturer: Minted by the renowned South African Mint
  • Country of origin: South Africa – home of the legendary Big Five

The Silver Big Five series by the South African Mint is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating coin series of our time. With the fourth edition of Series III, the mint now turns its attention to the leopard – that elusive, spotted predator that embodies the untamed wilderness of South Africa like no other. Anyone holding this collector's coin in their hands immediately senses it: here, the finest minting craftsmanship merges with the raw beauty of the African savanna.

A Design That Takes Your Breath Away

The obverse of this silver coin edition depicts a fully grown leopard in breathtakingly detailed fashion. The animal sits upright on a rocky outcrop, its gaze watchfully fixed on the distance. Every single spot of its characteristic rosette coat has been engraved into the silver with remarkable precision – the texture appears almost tangible. At the bottom edge of the coin sits the South African coat of arms, flanked by the inscriptions "SOUTH AFRICA" and "BIG FIVE 2026".

Yet the true masterpiece lies on the reverse. Here, the coin shows two mirror-image halves of a leopard's face in extreme close-up. The piercing eyes, the fine whiskers, the dense fur – all rendered with a depth of detail that is simply impressive. When two coins are placed side by side, a complete portrait of the leopard emerges. Several coins together even form an entire pride. At the center of the reverse, the face value "FIVE RAND", the weight "1OZ" and the fineness "Ag 999" are enclosed within a circular medallion.

Extreme Limitation – Reserved for Only a Few Collectors

What sets this coin apart from ordinary bullion issues? The numbers speak for themselves. With a mintage of just 10,000 pieces worldwide, this is a true rarity. By comparison, classic bullion coins such as the Krugerrand or the Maple Leaf are minted in the millions. The Big Five III Leopard, by contrast, is strictly limited – and this is precisely what makes it so desirable.

Those who invest in limited silver coins secure not only a tangible asset in precious metal, but also a piece of numismatic history with considerable appreciation potential.

Previous editions of the Big Five series have impressively demonstrated how quickly such collector's coins can sell out. Those who arrive too late often pay significantly more on the secondary market.

Silver as a Timeless Form of Wealth Protection

Beyond its numismatic appeal, this coin naturally offers all the advantages that physical silver brings as an investment. Silver has served as a store of value for thousands of years and has a long tradition as monetary metal. Especially in times of economic uncertainty and rising inflation, the white precious metal proves to be a reliable crisis protection.

What's more, industrial demand for silver continues to grow steadily – whether in solar technology, electronics, or medicine. The limited supply combined with rising demand could lead to a positive price development in the long run. And let's not forget: profits from the sale of silver are generally tax-free, provided the holding period is at least one year.
