The original

The first pfennig. From the Bank deutscher Länder.

As the first newly minted coin of the Deutsche Mark, the pfennig was put into circulation by the Bank deutscher Länder in early 1949. The design is by Adolf Jäger of Frankfurt am Main: 16.5 millimetres, 2 grams, a steel core clad with copper on both sides, struck with the dates 1948 and 1949. From 1950 the pfennig bore the legend BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND, and it remained legal tender until the end of 2001. The Pfennig 2026 takes up the design of the first issues once more. It is not an issue of the Federal Republic of Germany or the Deutsche Bundesbank.

Golden Pfennig 2026: Fine Gold with a Mintage of Only 1,000 Pieces

  • Strictly limited: Only 1,000 pieces are produced worldwide – just a fifth of the previous 2025 vintage's mintage of 5,000 pieces.
  • Growth potential: The scarce number of pieces lends this physical gold investment additional appreciation potential beyond the pure metal value.
  • Rarity in miniature format: A firmly limited edition within the "Symbolism" series, whose mintage is fixed from the outset.
  • Minting quality: Highest quality level Proof (PP) with mirror-like surfaces and a sharply raised relief.
  • Material / fineness: 0.5 g of the purest fine gold with a fineness of 999.9/1,000 – purity in four-nines quality.
  • Design: The large denomination figure "1" of the legendary Pfennig, with the five-leaved oak branch on the reverse beneath the inscription "Bank Deutscher Länder".
  • Manufacturer: In-house minting by Kettner Edelmetalle.
  • Country of origin: Germany – issued under the coinage sovereignty of the Republic of Liberia with a face value of 25 Dollars.
  • Investment character: Fully-fledged investment gold, whose value is based on the gold price – tradable worldwide and resalable at any time.

For more than half a century, it jingled in German purses. Now the Pfennig returns, this time struck in pure gold. The 0.5g Gold Pfennig 2026 translates an icon of German monetary history into fine gold and is among the most distinctive small gold coins of the year. A clear classification is important to us: this Pfennig is not merely a collector's coin, but recognized investment gold. The design tells a story. The substance, however, lies in the metal.

Strictly Limited: Why 1,000 Pieces Make the Difference

The Gold Pfennig of the 2025 vintage was already limited to 5,000 pieces. For 2026, the mintage has been drastically reduced once again – to a mintage of just 1,000 pieces worldwide. The value of this gold coin is based first and foremost on the fine gold it contains and moves with the gold price. The strict limitation can lend it an additional edge in the long run, since scarcity remains in demand.

Added to this is the minting quality. For the Proof finish, high-gloss polished dies and carefully prepared blanks are used, often with multiple striking impacts. The result: deep, mirror-like fields and a razor-sharp relief. The coincard protects the delicate surface and preserves the flawless condition of your coin.

The Design: German Monetary History in Fine Gold

The obverse is dominated by the large figure "1". To its left and right are the year digits "20" and "26", framed by two finely crafted branches; below, in an arc, reads "GOLD PFENNIG". A surrounding beaded border frames the coin's design. On the reverse, a five-leaved oak branch rises upward – the very design element that already featured on the original Pfennig pieces of 1948 and 1949. Above it arches the inscription "BANK DEUTSCHER LÄNDER", at the base sits the coat of arms of Liberia, complemented by "REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA" as well as the inscription "0.5g 9999 FINE GOLD 25 DOLLARS".

The Bank deutscher Länder was the predecessor of the Deutsche Bundesbank from 1948 to 1957. Following the currency reform of June 20, 1948, it put into circulation the first coins of the young D-Mark – including the Pfennig designed by Adolf Jäger featuring the oak branch. A piece of a new beginning, now struck in fine gold.

Half a Gram of Fine Gold – the Real Substance

As appealing as the design is, the real reason to buy lies in the precious metal. Gold has been regarded as a proven store of value for over 6,000 years. It is the oldest currency in the world, has thanks to its intrinsic value never been worth zero, and is recognized around the globe. It is no coincidence that central banks are among the largest holders of gold. While paper money can be multiplied at will, the supply of gold is limited – one reason why many investors value physical precious metals as a building block for inflation hedging and crisis protection.

Small denominations have their own particular appeal. Those who regularly add half a gram build up wealth step by step. Small quantities of gold accumulate over the years into a sizeable holding, which can be flexibly sold again or passed on to the next generation. Profits from the sale of physical gold are also generally tax-free if the holding period is at least one year.

Gold Pfennig, Small Bar, or Bullion Coin?

  • 1 g gold bar: double the gold quantity and usually a lower premium per gram – but without a face value, without Proof quality, and without a limited mintage.
  • 1/10 oz bullion coins such as the Krugerrand or Maple Leaf: around 3.11 g of fine gold and very liquid, but with a significantly higher entry price and generally without a fixed mintage limit.
  • 0.5g Gold Pfennig 2026: a particularly low entry threshold, Proof quality, and a firmly limited mintage – the premium over the pure metal value is naturally somewhat higher for a limited Proof minting.

Give the Gift of Genuine Investment Gold

For a christening, a birthday, a wedding, or under the Christmas tree: with the Gold Pfennig, you are not giving a fleeting object, but a lasting asset. Despite the personal occasion, what you are acquiring here is fully-fledged investment gold – minted fine gold, whose value is based on the gold price. For many young people, this is precisely the ideal entry point into physical gold investment.

"The Pfennig was once the smallest unit of the D-Mark. Struck in fine gold, it becomes the cornerstone of a solid gold fortune."
