Wonders of Australia – The Outback 2026: Australia's red expanse in the finest minting artistry

  • Strictly limited: worldwide mintage of only 5,000 pieces – the Perth Mint will not strike any more
  • Minting quality: the highest possible minting quality, Proof (PP), with mirrored fields and frosted reliefs
  • Rarity: a sought-after collector's coin from a still-young series – first editions are traditionally especially in demand
  • Growth potential: high potential for value appreciation due to the tight limitation and worldwide collector demand for Perth Mint issues
  • Design: an entire ecosystem on 40.90 mm – dingo, emus, crocodile, kangaroos, snake and a wedge-tailed eagle set against a rugged mountain backdrop
  • Manufacturer: The Perth Mint, one of the world's most renowned mints
  • Country of origin: Australia – legal tender with a face value of 1 AUD
  • Presentation: delivered in an elegant wooden box with numbered certificate of authenticity

This issue is pure collector's metal: 1 troy ounce of silver with a fineness of 999.9/1,000, 31.1 grams fine weight, 40.90 mm diameter – and a design best explored with a magnifying glass. The Australian wilderness, the Outback, is both a place of longing and a natural wonder. The Perth Mint has captured exactly this vastness on a single coin surface.

The design: a snapshot from the Outback

The reverse design comes from Jennifer McKenna and tells a scene rather than depicting a single animal. A dingo stands on a rocky outcrop. Two emus stalk through the riverbed, one lowering its head to the water. A snake lies coiled on a rock, while a crocodile emerges from the water – jaws open, its scaly armor chiselled down to the last detail. Three kangaroos bound across the dry terrain, and above them a wedge-tailed eagle, Australia's largest bird of prey, traces its path. Completing the scene is the mountain range on the horizon, the year of issue 2026, and the famous "P" mint mark of the Perth Mint.

The obverse features the portrait of King Charles III designed by Dan Thorne, framed by finely engraved Australian flora along the outer edge, complemented by weight, fineness and face value. Especially in Proof quality, this contrast between mirror-like shine and frosted relief comes into its full effect.

Why the limitation makes the difference

With a worldwide mintage of 5,000 pieces, we're talking about a genuine rarity. By comparison: classics like the Kookaburra or Koala are issued in bullion quality in far higher numbers, as is the Australian Brumby. Anyone who collects silver coins with a very low mintage knows the effect – once a series is established, the early, strictly limited Proof issues become the hardest to obtain. This lays the foundation for collector premiums that can significantly exceed the pure material value.

A coin that speaks two languages: that of precious metal and that of collector's passion. Together, they make Perth Mint rarities so popular.

Silver as the foundation – a collector's piece with substance

Beneath the artistic surface lies a raw material with a monetary history spanning millennia. Silver has served as coinage metal in nearly every major culture; it is scarce, liquid and tradable worldwide, and further anchored industrially through demand from electronics, solar and medical technology. It can be exchanged in small units, it does not age, and it is excellently suited for passing on to the next generation. Unlike pure paper money, it holds intrinsic value – an argument that convinces many buyers alongside inflation hedge considerations and the idea of solid crisis protection.

For tax purposes in Germany: profits from the sale of physical silver coins are generally tax-free, provided the minimum holding period of one year is observed.

Who this issue is suited for

  • Collectors of Australian animal designs who look beyond the Kookaburra, Koala and Kangaroo
  • Enthusiasts of Proof issues who appreciate minting artistry and fine detail
  • Newcomers looking for a strictly limited collector's coin with a manageable capital outlay
  • Collectors who deliberately build collections of first editions and series launches
  • Gift-givers for whom a wooden box and certificate provide a fitting presentation

Anyone wishing to buy silver coins with character will find here an issue that convinces both on the shelf and in the portfolio: low mintage, a grand stage, Australian wilderness in fine silver.
