5 oz Silver Kookaburra 2026 Incused – Rarity with a Mintage of Only 500 Pieces

  • Strictly limited: worldwide mintage of only 500 pieces – no more will ever be produced
  • Growth potential: Very high potential for appreciation in value thanks to strict limitation and lively collector demand
  • Rarity: an exceptionally rare collector's coin – one of the scarcest Perth Mint issues of 2026 (you'll find further pieces in our collector's coin selection)
  • Minting quality: the highest possible minting quality "Proof" (PP) in high relief
  • Minting technique: Incused – the design lies recessed below the surface rather than raised above it
  • Design: Kookaburra in flight over a river, framed by trees and rugged bushland rock formations
  • Material / fineness: 155.5 grams of pure fine silver with a fineness of 999.9/1,000
  • Manufacturer: The Perth Mint, one of the world's most storied mints
  • Country of origin: Australia – legal tender with a face value of 8 dollars
  • Collector's appeal: a showpiece for the cabinet, whose strict limitation holds high potential for appreciation in value

Five ounces of silver, 50.90 millimetres in diameter, a design that doesn't rise up out of the surface but instead leads down into it. The incused technique simply reverses the familiar relief effect: the bird lies recessed beneath the coin's surface, and the light travels differently through the design with every movement. Anyone holding this 5-ounce format for the first time usually underestimates it – until it's actually resting in their palm. And since only 500 pieces worldwide were produced, one thing is certain: this issue will be sought after long after it has sold out.

The Kookaburra in Flight – the 2026 Design

The reverse was designed by Wade Robinson. It depicts the famous bush bird in flight over a river, framed by lush branches and rugged rock formations – along with the inscription "KOOKABURRA", the mint's "P" mintmark, and the weight, fineness and year of issue. The obverse bears the effigy of King Charles III created by Dan Thorne, with the inscription AUSTRALIA and the face value.

The Silver Kookaburra has accompanied collectors since 1990. A new design every year, a new interpretation of the laughing kingfisher every year – it is precisely this rhythm that has made the series a classic. Early years depicted the bird calmly perched on a branch; today the mint stages entire landscape scenes with sophisticated depth layering. The 2026 Silver Kookaburra coin in incused technique marks the most technically demanding variant of the programme to date.

Proof Quality: Mirror Finish Meets High Relief

The Proof minting quality requires polished dies, multiple striking passes, and handwork under the strictest control. The result: deep, mirror-black surfaces from which the frosted design elements stand out in relief. The edge is reeded, and the coin is delivered in the mint's presentation case together with a certificate of authenticity. Please only ever handle a Proof piece by its edge – fingerprints are almost impossible to remove from a mirror finish.

Why the Limitation Matters So Much Here

500 pieces for the entire global market: that's fewer coins than some major dealers move in bullion products on a single day.

By comparison: the classic 1-ounce bullion coin from the Kookaburra programme is issued with a maximum mintage of 500,000 pieces per year. The 5-ounce incused edition amounts to just a thousandth of that figure. Even popular Perth Mint series such as Lunar (for instance the Year of the Horse) or the Kangaroo reach many times this number of pieces in their standard versions. Anyone who collects limited mintages knows the mechanism: small mintages quickly end up in firm hands, and what ends up in collections rarely returns to the market. It is precisely this that fuels the potential for appreciation in value of this rarity.

Silver – Collecting Pleasure with Real Material Value

Alongside its numismatic appeal stands solid metal: 155.5 grams of fine silver, tradeable worldwide and liquid at any time. Silver coins have served as a means of payment and store of value for thousands of years, and the white metal is also an indispensable raw material in electronics, solar and medical technology. This interplay of industrial demand and limited availability makes silver an ideal carrier metal for many collectors – and physical precious metal has traditionally also served as a means of inflation hedge and crisis protection. Under current German law, profits from the sale of physical silver held for at least one year are generally tax-free; this notice does not replace individual tax advice.
