From the rock
Titanoboa is the largest snake known.
Its vertebrae were found in a coal mine in Colombia. From the size of the vertebrae, its length is estimated at about 13 metres.
No human has ever seen this animal alive: it lived a few million years after the end of the dinosaurs, and the human genus has existed for about 2.8 million years.

✔ Über die Münzserie
Die Münzserie, zu der diese Silbermünze gehört, heißt Prehistoric Life und wird vom deutschen Hersteller Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt herausgebracht. Mittlerweile gibt es von dieser Serie schon 10 Ausgaben und diese Silbermünze ist die zehnte. Als Münzmotiv wurden immer Tierarten ausgewählt, die bereits ausgestorben sind und heute nicht mehr existieren.
✔ Die wohl größte Schlange aller Zeiten
Die farbige Motivseite dieser Silbermünze zeigt die Titanoboa. Die Titanoboa war eine Boa-Art, die schon seit einer langen Zeit ausgestorben ist. Mit einer Länge von ungefähr 14 Metern ist sie die wohl größte Schlange aller Zeiten. In der Epoche „Paläozän“, also zwischen 60 Millionen und 58 Millionen Jahren vor Christus, war der Kontinent Südamerika ihr Zuhause. Besonders der Amazonas, des die Titanoboa war eine erstklassige Schwimmerin. Auch an den Ufern des Amazonas machte sie es sich gemütlich. Aufgrund ihrer einschüchternden Größe soll sie sich unter anderem auch von Krokodilen und Schildkröten ernährt haben. Deshalb ist im Hintergrund des Münzmotivs auch ein Krokodil zu sehen. Ihre Größte ist auch der Grund, warum ihr der Name „Titanoboa“ gegeben wurden, denn die Übersetzung des Namens lautet „riesige Boa“. Giftig war die Boa-Art allerdings nicht. Die Titanoboa war eine Würgeschlange. Die riesige Schlangenart Anakonda stammt von der Titanoboa ab.
✔ Gibt Auskunft über das Klima
Die Titanoboa kann sozusagen als ein Thermometer verwendet werden. Das liegt daran, dass Schlangen wechselwarme Tiere sind. Forscher wissen, dass die Titanoboa eine Länge von 14 Metern erreichen konnte. Das konnte allerdings nur dann möglich sein, wenn die Temperatur im Amazonas zu der damaligen Epoche zwischen 32 und 25 Grad betrogen hat. Anhand der Länge der Titanoboa wissen Forscher also heute weitaus mehr über das Klima in Südamerika im Zeitalter „Paläozän“. Im Laufe der Zeit ist das Klima in Südamerika jedoch kühler geworden. Heute herrschen dort 25 bis 28 Grad.
