Red List: least concernOn this coin

Some coins are meant to be looked at. This one you want to touch. The 2026 edition of the Wedge-Tailed Eagle series is a collector's coin in which the minting technique itself becomes the design: two troy ounces of fine silver, a relief that seems to literally grow out of the surface, and a partial gilding with 24-karat gold that makes the contrast with the mirrored background truly flash. Only 1,000 pieces exist worldwide.
The edition was once again designed by US engraver John M. Mercanti – it is already his eleventh design for this Australian series. Mercanti served as the twelfth Chief Engraver of the US Mint and created more coin and medal designs there than any other employee in the institution's history. The obverse shows the heads and upper neck areas of two Wedge-Tailed Eagles, looking strictly in profile to the right, with exceptionally detailed feather structure. The design and outer rim are gilded; the image is complemented by the inscriptions "AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE" and "2026 2oz 9999 SILVER", as well as the traditional "P" mint mark of the Perth Mint. The reverse bears the portrait of King Charles III designed by Dan Thorne and the face value of 2 dollars.
The Wedge-Tailed Eagle is Australia's largest bird of prey and a symbol of the continent's vastness. According to the Perth Mint, its wingspan reaches up to 2.8 meters, and it soars at heights of over 2,000 meters. Within the "Animals" collection, it is one of the most popular designs of all.
With Reverse Proof, the proportions are reversed: the design appears matte, while the background is mirrored. Combined with the high relief, this creates a three-dimensionality that classic bullion coins cannot offer. The back of the relief is struck concave, so that the metal distributes optimally into the depths of the die during striking – an elaborate process that explains the small mintage.
For comparison: the colored 1-ounce edition of the same year is issued in 2,500 pieces, its gilded 5-ounce sibling in 500. With a very low mintage of 1,000 pieces, this 2-ounce coin falls exactly within the range that draws particular attention from collectors worldwide – large enough to remain tradeable, small enough for genuine scarcity. Anyone who selects silver coins not just by metal content but by rarity and craftsmanship will find a distinct rarity here.
A silver coin whose value does not depend on weight alone, but on craftsmanship, design history, and mintage.
The series launched in 2014 and has enjoyed cult status ever since. Earlier special variants with High Relief or gilding are often difficult to find on the secondary market and only at significant premiums. This is not automatic – collector markets remain subject to supply and demand. But the starting position of a permanently closed mintage, a prominent designer, and an elaborate minting technique is exactly what collectors look for.
For collectors of Australian animal designs, certainly. For buyers who take pleasure in exceptional coin artistry, likewise. And for anyone wishing to expand their silver holdings with a position carrying a collector's premium. A note on transparency: this edition is traded including 19% VAT, as is customary for collector's coins – its appeal lies in its numismatic value, not in the pure material price. Anyone focusing primarily on inflation hedging or classic crisis protection should also turn to standard investment products – and place this premium coin as a showpiece in the display cabinet.
The coin is delivered in the high-quality Perth Mint case with a numbered certificate. Just as a collector's coin of this class deserves: protected, documented, ready to be shown at any time.
