Some images you see once and never forget. The poster for Ridley Scott's "Alien" from 1979 is undoubtedly one of them. Four decades later, the Perth Mint has translated this image into fine silver – not as a round coin, but as a rectangular silver foil in poster format. Anyone searching for collector's coins with real character will find here an object that instantly catches the eye in any display case.

The poster that redefined horror cinema

Philip Gips and Steve Frankfurt designed a motif that deliberately conceals more than it reveals: a huge, mottled egg, beneath it a V-shaped crack from which an otherworldly yellow-green light emerges. The egg floats in complete darkness above a grate. No monster, no blood. Only foreboding – and that is exactly what made this poster immortal.

The silver foil captures this visual language with astonishing precision. At the top sits the coloured reproduction of the original poster, below which the inscription "40TH ANNIVERSARY" runs across a finely engraved, stylised etching of technical structures reminiscent of the spaceship Nostromo. The reverse bears a repeating, all-over engraving of the Perth Mint logo along with the marking "35g 999 SILVER". Colouring and engraving interlock – a craftsmanship considerably more elaborate than a classic strike.

Colour surface, engraved structure, fine silver 999: a film poster you can actually hold in your hand.

The Perth Mint's first silver foil – and what that means for collectors

The Perth Mint is known to collectors worldwide through series such as Kookaburra, Koala, or Lunar. With the Alien 40th Anniversary edition, however, the house ventured into new territory in 2019, as it was the first silver foil in its range. First editions traditionally enjoy special status among collectors: they mark the beginning of an entirely new category and can never be replicated afterwards.

The foil is delivered in a mount made of Plexiglas with stainless steel fittings. The design is frameless, and the mount can be fixed to a wall or displayed upright using two screw-on stands. This keeps the delicate fine silver protected while remaining fully visible. Everything is packaged in the original black box featuring the Alien™ design.

Why a mintage of just 1,000 pieces makes all the difference

Only 1,000 pieces – for a globally marketed licensed design, that is extraordinarily few. By comparison: classic investment issues such as the Kookaburra silver coin are released annually in six-figure quantities, and even many themed series run to between 5,000 and 50,000 pieces. This rarity, therefore, is no coincidence but the result of deliberate limitation. When such a scarce supply meets a fan community that has been collecting Alien memorabilia for decades, the result is a constellation that collectors are watching very closely.

A word on quality: the edition is issued in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU), not Proof. For a coloured, large-format surface, this is the fitting choice, as the design itself – not a mirror-like shine – takes centre stage. Those who have so far only collected round formats will find in this foil an appealing contrast for their collection.

Silver: treasured by collectors, in demand across industry

Silver looks back on a thousands-year-old tradition as a coinage metal and was regarded in many cultures as a symbol of wealth and prestige. At the same time, it is a heavily utilised industrial metal: electronics, solar technology, and medical technology all require it, while the mineable supply remains limited. Silver coins, bars, and silver foils combine this intrinsic value with numismatic appeal – and are often more accessible compared to gold issues. That physical precious metal is also valued as inflation hedge and as crisis protection is a welcome side effect; with this edition, the collector's value is clearly at the forefront.

Tax note: Profits from the sale of physical silver products are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. The purchase price of this collector's medal includes 19% VAT.
