There are coins you buy. And there are pieces you immediately want to hold in your hand – because they look like a find from a Victorian jewellery box. This collector's coin undoubtedly belongs to the second category: two ounces of silver, an inset cameo medallion in delicate pale blue, plus a surface deliberately crafted to look like it has spent decades in a display case.
The design: 19th-century jewellery art, translated into fine silver
Queen Victoria loved cameos – those portrait pieces carved from shells or stone that became fashionable during her reign. The design ties directly into this tradition. At the centre of the obverse sits a separately crafted cameo inlay depicting the young Queen with banksia wreaths in her hair, originally created by Leonard Charles Wyon. This portrait adorned the Sydney Sovereign Type II from 1857 to 1870 – a detail that connoisseurs of Australian coin history will instantly recognise.
A finely worked filigree ornamentation winds around the medallion, crowned by the St Edward's Crown. The legend reads "QUEEN VICTORIA" and "200th ANNIVERSARY", along with the "P" mint mark of the Perth Mint. The reverse bears the Elizabeth II portrait by Jody Clark, the year of issue 2019, the face value "2 DOLLARS" as well as the inscription "2oz 9999 Ag". The edition was designed by Jennifer McKenna.
Antique finish: every piece a one-of-a-kind
Fitting the historical theme, the Perth Mint hand-antiqued every coin. This treatment creates the dark depths, silvery highlights and fine signs of wear characteristic of an aged artefact. Because the process is done by hand, the appearance varies minimally from piece to piece – no two examples are perfectly identical. Combined with the high relief, this creates a sculptural depth effect that is barely reproducible in photographs.

Why this edition is so sought after among collectors
For the Queen's 200th birthday, the Perth Mint released several variants – including a 2 oz gold Proof edition with just 350 pieces. The 2 oz silver variant with cameo inlay combines two things that rarely coincide: a truly strictly limited mintage and a design that appeals instantly even to non-numismatists. Compared with classic bullion coins such as the Australian Kangaroo or the Koala series, the appeal here lies not in pure metal value, but in craftsmanship, material combination and availability. The downside of such a premium coin: it is never traded in large quantities. The advantage: precisely because of this, it remains a rarity.
A mintage of 2,000 pieces is spread across a global collector market – mathematically, hardly one piece remains per major collecting region.
Those who collect thematically will find an anchor point here: personalities of world history, British monarchy, Victorian aesthetics. Those with a broader collection will add a piece of striking character to their collection of classic silver coins with this edition. That physical precious metals are also valued as an inflation hedge and for crisis protection is a pleasant side effect – but with this edition, the collector's value is clearly at the forefront.
The coin is delivered in a classic coin case with a clear lid, packed in the illustrated original box and accompanied by the numbered certificate from the Perth Mint. This keeps the antique finish protected, and provenance can be verified at any time – two points that experience shows carry weight when reselling such an edition later on.
