  • Manufacturer: Minted by the renowned New Zealand Mint
  • Country of origin: Issued for Niue, legal tender with a face value of 5 dollars

On 12 October 1492, a Genoese seafarer, after 36 days on the open sea, set foot on a beach unknown to anyone in Europe. This very moment is captured on this collector's coin – not as a flat portrait, but as a multi-figure scene with depth. The 2 oz coin made of 999 fine silver is the second issue in the New Zealand Mint's Journeys of Discovery series and was released in September 2015.

The design: a landing in high relief

The obverse shows Columbus with his crew on the shore of the New World. A standard-bearer raises the flag, a clergyman kneels in the sand, while in the background the sailing ships lie at anchor, with steep cliffs and circling birds above. Above the scene runs the inscription CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS in antiqued small capitals, and along the lower edge the words "2 oz 999 FINE SILVER". The reverse bears the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, along with the inscriptions ELIZABETH II, NIUE, FIVE DOLLARS and the year of issue 2015 – also antiqued, giving this coin of Niue a visually cohesive appearance.

At the time, the Antique Finish was still a rarity for the New Zealand Mint. The artificially aged surface settles into the recesses of the engraving, highlighting edges and faces, making the piece look like a find from a ship's chest. No high gloss, no Proof – deliberately so.

Journeys of Discovery: six explorers, one completed cycle

Between June 2015 and March 2016, the series was dedicated to six great explorers. It is fully completed, which further increases its appeal to collectors:

  • Marco Polo (2015) – the meeting with Kublai Khan, first issue of the series
  • Christopher Columbus (2015) – this piece, the second issue
  • Vasco da Gama (2016) – the arrival in Calicut
  • Ferdinand Magellan (2016) – the first circumnavigation of the globe
  • David Livingstone (2016) – at Victoria Falls
  • Charles Darwin (2016) – on the Galápagos Islands

Each issue in the series was released with a mintage of 2,000 pieces. Anyone wishing to complete the series is therefore competing for a very limited stock – a circumstance that, over the years, has typically drawn attention to such issues.

Why silver is so appealing to collectors

Silver has been a coinage metal and store of value for thousands of years, a symbol of prosperity and prestige in almost every culture. It is durable, retains its physical properties over generations, and possesses an intrinsic value – traded worldwide as a commodity – due to its industrial use in electronics, solar and medical technology. Supply is limited, while demand from new technologies tends to grow. Added to this is a tax advantage that many collectors appreciate: profits from the sale of physical silver are generally tax-free, provided a minimum holding period of one year is observed.

Unlike classic investment bars and mass-produced silver coins – such as Maple Leaf or Britannia with mintages in the millions – this piece is defined not by its metal weight but by craftsmanship and scarcity. The drawback compared to bullion: the premium over the pure material value is higher. The advantage: such a rarity cannot be re-minted. For anyone who fundamentally views tangible assets as inflation hedge and crisis protection, this piece also offers a collector's item with history.

Gold and silver are humanity's oldest currencies – they have outlived every paper currency. And sometimes they also tell a story you can hold in your hand.

Who this commemorative coin is suited for

For collectors of historical themes, for fans of the Antique Finish, and for anyone specifically seeking issues with a very low mintage. The combination of a completed series, elaborate engraving, a high-quality wooden box, and a mintage of just 2,000 pieces makes this one of the more interesting offerings among antiqued 2 oz silver coins. And no matter how many years pass: 62.2 grams of fine silver remain 62.2 grams of fine silver – tradable worldwide, liquid at any time, with no expiration date.
