Some coins tell a story. This one tells perhaps the most consequential journey in the history of science. The two-ounce collector's coin from the New Zealand Mint depicts Charles Darwin in the midst of his work – and with a mintage of only 2,000 pieces, it is a genuine rarity among the antiqued issues from Niue.
The design: Galápagos, iguanas and the HMS Beagle
The design side immediately transports the viewer into a scene. Darwin sits with notebook and sketchbook on the beach of a remote island in the Galápagos archipelago, two iguanas lying close in front of him, plants, pebbles and rock worked out down to the finest detail. In the background, the HMS Beagle lies calmly at anchor – the survey ship on which the young naturalist sailed around the world for five years starting in 1831, gathering material for his theory of evolution. A banner at the top bears the name CHARLES DARWIN, while the lower edge notes the inscription "2 oz 999 FINE SILVER".
The value side features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, with the inscriptions NIUE, ELIZABETH II and FIVE DOLLARS as well as the year of issue 2016. The obverse is also antiqued – a detail that connoisseurs of this series particularly appreciate.
Antique finish meets high relief
The antique finish is the centerpiece of this commemorative coin. The dark-toned recesses give the relief an exceptionally three-dimensional appearance, almost like a small bronze relief in silver. Antiqued strikes were still the exception at the New Zealand Mint at the time of release, making the craftsmanship all the more striking. Through the finishing process, each silver coin takes on a slightly individual character: no two pieces are exactly alike.
Journeys of Discovery: six explorers, one finale
The "Journeys of Discovery" series was dedicated between 2015 and 2016 to six great explorers: Marco Polo, Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama, Ferdinand Magellan, David Livingstone, and finally Charles Darwin. The Darwin edition was released in March 2016 as the sixth and final strike. This is exactly what makes it so appealing to complete-set collectors: without this piece, any collection in the series remains incomplete, and the series will not be continued.

Why small mintages excite collectors
With silver coins, availability – alongside metal value – is the primary factor determining desirability. Measured against a worldwide collector market, 2,000 pieces is a very low mintage – and no further strikes will be produced. This limitation is precisely what creates the collector's value that experienced numismatists appreciate in antiqued two-ounce strikes. Anyone wishing to complete the series will inevitably have to turn to the secondary market; experience shows that such pieces tend to end up in permanent collections and rarely resurface.
Compared to the many antiqued mythology and deity series from other mints, Darwin stands out with a realistic, narrative visual composition rather than stylized symbolism. Compared to classic bullion coins such as Maple Leaf or Britannia, the appeal lies less in pure material value – and more in the design, craftsmanship, packaging and rarity. Bullion coins, in turn, are minted in virtually unlimited numbers: exactly the distinction that makes a collector's coin like this one so special.
Six explorers, one completed series – and with Darwin, the finale in just 2,000 pieces.
Tangible asset with character
Physical silver has been a coinage metal, a store of value, and a symbol of wealth and prestige for millennia. It is durable, retains its physical properties across generations, and is traded worldwide as a commodity – not least because electronics, solar and medical technology permanently require this white metal. This dual role as both an industrial and monetary metal gives silver an intrinsic value that fiat money does not possess, while supply naturally remains limited. For those looking to build tangible value for future generations beyond the collector's aspect, we also offer products for your inflation hedge as well as ready-assembled packages for crisis protection.
Packaging and tax treatment
The coin is delivered in the original wooden box with certificate of authenticity – packaging deliberately designed to echo the theme of journeys of discovery and to protect the strike over the long term. The sale is subject to the margin scheme under § 25a UStG. Profits from the sale of physical silver are generally tax-free for private individuals, provided a minimum holding period of one year is observed. This edition thus combines two things that rarely come together: powerful narrative design and a strict limitation that continues to underscore its appeal with every passing year.
