1 ounce of silver, brilliant uncirculated, issuing country Democratic Republic of the Congo. It lived about 60 to 58 million years ago in what is now Colombia.

From the rock

Titanoboa is the largest snake known.

Its vertebrae were found in a coal mine in Colombia. From the size of the vertebrae, its length is estimated at about 13 metres.

No human has ever seen this animal alive: it lived a few million years after the end of the dinosaurs, and the human genus has existed for about 2.8 million years.

 ✔ Prähistorisches Leben 

Haben Sie sich schon einmal gefragt, was für einzigartige Tierarten, die Erde bewohnten, zu einem Zeitpunkt, zu dem es noch nicht einmal Menschen gab? Die Münzserie Prehistoric Life des Herstellers Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt gibt Ihnen einen Eindruck davon, wie gewisse Tierarten damals ausgesehen haben, die heute gar nicht mehr existieren. Viele Tierarten von damals sind ausgestorben oder haben sich weiterentwickelt. Diese Silbermünze ist die zehnte Ausgabe der Serie. 

✔ Eine riesige Würgeschlange 

Einer riesigen Boa von 14 Meter würden wir ungern begegnen. Genauso eine Schlangenart, die Titanoboa, lebte einst in Südamerika und schwamm durch den Amazonas. Die Titanoboa lebte im Zeitintervall Paläozän, also zwischen 60 und 58 Millionen Jahren vor Christus. In diesem Zeitintervall entwickelten sich zum Beispiel Schildkröten, Möwen, Beuteltiere, Schnabeltiere und Schlangen. Einige Tierarten existieren heute noch. Die Titanoboa glücklicherweise nicht mehr. Allerdings ist sie der Vorfahre der heute bekannten Anakonda. Zu den Lieblingsspeisen der Titanoboa gehörten Krokodile und Schildkröten. Die Titanoboa war eine Würgeschlange und hatte somit keine Probleme, große und gefährliche Tiere wie ein Krokodil zu töten. Ihren Namen hat die Riesenschlange ihrer Länge zu verdanken, denn Titanoboa bedeutet „riesige Boa“. Genau diese ausgestorbene Boa-Art ziert die Motivseite der Silbermünze. 

Die Erkenntnis, dass die Schlange tatsächlich bis zu 14 Meter lang werden konnte, brachte die Forscher einen großen Schritt weiter, was das Klima in Südamerika im Zeitintervall Paläozän betrifft. Es wurde immer vermutet, dass die Temperatur deutlich kühler war, als es tatsächlich der Fall war. Die Titanoboa wurde von Wissenschaftlern als eine Art Thermometer benutzt. Denn da diese, wie alle Schlagen, wechselwarm war, benötigte sie eine Temperatur zwischen 32 und 35 Grad, um ihre furchteinflößende Länge erreichen zu können. Damit war es zur damaligen Zeit im Amazonas wärmer als ursprünglich angenommen. Auch heute ist Südamerika die Heimat von riesigen und gefährlichen Schlangen, wie eben der Anakonda. Mit 9 Metern ist sie heute zwar eine der längsten Schlangen der Welt, aber dennoch um ein großes Stück kleiner als die Titanoboa.
