Australia · Wedge-tailed Eagle

The eagle with the wedge-shaped tail

Its tail is long and wedge-shaped, its legs are feathered down to the toes.

It lives across the whole Australian mainland, on Tasmania and in southern New Guinea, from the coast to the mountains. Of the world’s large eagles it is the most common.

Its nest of dead branches is used for years; nests 1.8 metres wide, 3 metres deep and weighing about 400 kilograms are known.

1 oz Gold Wedge Tailed Eagle 2026 – A Rarity for Discerning Collector's Hearts

Some coins appear, get bought – and are forgotten. And then there is that one coin, of which only 350 pieces exist worldwide. The Gold Wedge Tailed Eagle 2026 belongs to the second category. A strictly limited mintage that connoisseurs recognise at first glance: here, nothing was merely produced – it was composed.

  • Strictly limited: Worldwide mintage of just 350 pieces – a true rarity
  • Minting quality: The highest possible refinement in Proof quality
  • Special feature: Elaborate High Relief minting for a three-dimensional look and tangible feel
  • Design: Two majestic wedge-tailed eagles in profile – a vivid double portrait full of intricate detail
  • Investment goal: Rare collector's coin with considerable appreciation potential
  • Growth opportunities: High appreciation potential thanks to tight limitation and strong demand
  • Material / fineness: One troy ounce (31.1 g) of purest gold at 999.9/1,000
  • Manufacturer: Minted by the world-renowned Perth Mint
  • Country of origin: Australia

The design – two eagles, one piercing gaze

Take a look at the obverse: two heads of the Australian wedge-tailed eagle (Aquila audax) stand close together, one in the foreground with razor-sharp detailed plumage, the other behind, slightly offset, with proudly raised beak. Every single feather appears as if hand-chiselled – a wealth of detail that is only brought out so impressively through the High Relief technique. The inscription "AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE" is followed at the lower edge by "2026 1oz 9999 GOLD", complemented by the Perth Mint's characteristic "P" mint mark.

An eagle that doesn't fly, but looks at you – this coin has a character that cannot be taught.

On the reverse rests the portrait of King Charles III in clear profile, flanked by "CHARLES III" and "AUSTRALIA". Below it is emblazoned the face value of 100 dollars. The combination of classic portrait artistry and powerful nature motif turns this mintage into a small work of art in coin format.

Why this coin should not be missing from any serious collection

The maths is ruthlessly simple: only 350 pieces for the entire world. Anyone who collects knows what that means – the competition for every single piece is fierce, the supply tiny. It is precisely this very low mintage that forms the foundation for the high appreciation potential that ambitious collectors so value in such a gold coin rarity. A clear promise of returns would be irresponsible – but the history of strictly limited Perth Mint mintages tells a rather interesting story.

The coin belongs to the Perth Mint's Wedge-Tailed Eagle Series and comes in an elegant wooden case along with an official certificate of authenticity. The reeded edge, the diameter of 27.60 mm, and the Proof quality round off the overall picture. Compared to standard bullion coins such as the Krugerrand or the Maple Leaf, which are issued in mintages running into the millions, this piece plays in a completely different league – the league of genuine collector's coins.

Precious metal with history – and tax appeal

Despite all the enthusiasm for collecting, there remains a pleasant side effect: gold is VAT-exempt when purchased, and profits from its sale are generally tax-free after a holding period of one year. This precious metal has accompanied humanity for over 6,000 years – the oldest currency in the world, one that has outlasted every paper currency. Those who wish may also see in such pieces a certain inflation hedge or even a form of crisis protection. However, the clear focus here is on the collector's joy in an exceptionally rare mintage.

In short: whoever calls this rarity their own owns one of only 350 pieces – grab it before the last eagle has flown away.
