The white paper, 2008

The comparison with gold miners

The Bitcoin white paper, announced on 31 October 2008, compares the steady addition of new coins with gold miners:

“… analogous to gold miners expending resources to add gold to circulation. In our case, it is CPU time and electricity that is expended.”

Bitcoin white paper, section 6, “Incentive”

What the medal says

The four phrases

BULLION NOT BITS: bullion means gold or silver in bars, a bit is the smallest unit of information in a computer.

SAFETY IN NUMBERS is an English proverb: as part of a group, one is less likely to come to harm.

The reverse of the medal adds PROTECT THE FUTURE and REAL METAL • REAL VALUE.

Or, as we put it:

Gold is the real crypto.

Crypto comes from the Greek kryptós, meaning hidden.
