Small, but with a great story: the 1/20 ounce Gold Libertad 2026 brings Mexico's most famous design to just 13 millimetres. Anyone wishing to build up their stock of gold coins step by step will find an appealing entry point here. And one with real character.

Victoria over Mexico City: the design in detail

The obverse shows the winged goddess of victory Victoria enthroned on the column of the "Ángel de la Independencia" in Mexico City. With her arm outstretched, she gazes over the high valley. Behind her rise the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, while at the lower edge agave and prickly pear cactus, typical plants of the country, can be seen. To the right of the figure sits the "Mo" mint mark of the Mexican mint. The inscriptions "1/20 ONZA", "ORO PURO" and "2026 LEY .999" frame the scene.

The reverse belongs to Mexico's national coat of arms: an eagle perches on a nopal cactus, holding a snake in its beak. This is the founding symbol of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan. Oak and laurel branches frame the image, above which reads "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS". On the 1-ounce issue, the coat of arms is surrounded by ten historical predecessor versions. The smaller denominations, by contrast, show only the current coat of arms, giving them a clean, uncluttered look.

A classic since 1981

The Mexico Libertad ranks among the oldest modern bullion coins of all. The first gold issues appeared in 1981, at that time still in a 900 alloy. Since 1991, the series has been struck in fine gold, and the same year saw the addition of the small 1/10 and 1/20 ounce denominations. One special feature: the Libertad bears no stamped face value. Nevertheless, it is legal tender in Mexico, with its value based on the current gold price.

Collectors are drawn above all to the traditionally low mintages. Other bullion coins are produced in the millions. The annual mintages of the 1/20 ounce in Brilliant Uncirculated quality, by contrast, have recently mostly been in the low four-digit range. This makes each year of issue its own chapter in a sought-after collection. Alongside the Brilliant Uncirculated version, the Casa de Moneda also mints Proof editions, and for the larger denominations additionally as Reverse Proof. And for those who love the design, it can also be found on the silver Libertad, the little sibling of the golden Onza.

Why gold? A store of value with 6,000 years of experience

Even in ancient Egypt, the yellow metal served as a benchmark for trade. Pharaohs, emperors and kings adorned themselves with it, it changed hands along the Silk Road, and in the 19th and 20th centuries the gold standard underpinned entire currency systems. Paper money has come and gone. Gold has remained.

Gold is the world's oldest currency and has never had a value of zero.

The reason is simple: the precious metal possesses an inherent, intrinsic value. Central banks can print fiat money, but gold cannot be multiplied at will. Tellingly, it is precisely the central banks that rank among the world's largest gold holders. Against inflation and currency risks, the metal has proven itself over generations, as well as serving as crisis protection in politically and economically turbulent times.

  • VAT-free: As investment gold, the Libertad is exempt from VAT.
  • Tax-free after one year: Profits from the sale are generally tax-free in Germany after a holding period of at least one year.
  • Tradable worldwide: High liquidity, international recognition, quickly convertible into cash.
  • Durable: Gold does not corrode and retains its shine for centuries.
  • Generational wealth: A building block for retirement provision that can be passed down well.

The 1/20 ounce in comparison: when is the small denomination worthwhile?

At 1.56 grams of fine gold, the 1/20 ounce is one of the smallest sizes in the Libertad series. Compared to the 1/10 ounce or the full Onza, the premium per gram is somewhat higher, since minting and handling costs proportionally more for small coins. In return, this gold coin offers maximum flexibility. It can be purchased regularly in manageable amounts and is suitable as a medium of exchange in an emergency. Later, it can be sold individually without having to touch an entire ounce.

Compared to a small gold bar, the coin has a further advantage: it is official coinage of a sovereign state and bears a design recognised worldwide. As a gift for a birth, christening or confirmation, it also makes a far more impressive presentation.

Quality that lasts

The 1/20 ounce Gold Mexico Libertad 2026 is supplied as new merchandise in bank-standard condition and is protected by a coin capsule. This ensures that the finely worked details remain permanently preserved, from the goddess of victory's feathered wings to the volcanic slopes. It is suitable as the start of a Libertad collection, as an addition to an existing holding, or as a small, shining building block for one's own wealth protection. This coin from Mexico combines centuries-old minting tradition with genuine substance.
