Australian Sovereign 2026, set, three coins in a case

Since 1871, St George and the dragon have appeared on the Sovereigns of every monarch. The Perth Mint strikes it with a new St George and the portrait of Charles III.

1489 · Henry VII

A gold coin called Sovereign

In October 1489, Henry VII gave a new gold coin the name Sovereign. It was larger than anything England had issued before.

Under George III, the new Sovereign of 20 shillings replaced the guinea of 21 shillings. Benedetto Pistrucci, an Italian gem engraver, created St George and the dragon for it; in 1821 George received a sword in place of the broken lance.

1855 to 1923 · Branch mints

The “chief coin of the world”

That is what the Sovereign was called in the 19th century; it was accepted even in Brazil.

The Royal Mint also struck it at branch mints: Sydney from 1855, Melbourne 1872, Perth 1899, Ottawa 1908, Bombay 1918 and Pretoria 1923, almost 500 million pieces in all.

The Royal Canadian Mint, the Perth Mint and the South African Mint descend from these branch mints.

Perth · until 1931 and today

A new St George from Perth

Until 1931, Perth produced 106 million Sovereigns, each with Pistrucci’s St George.

Today the Australian Sovereign of the Perth Mint shows a new design: Jennifer McKenna draws an unclothed rider swinging his sword above the dragon. On the value side is Charles III, after Dan Thorne.

The Perth Mint · 2026

Three coins, one St George

The case holds a Sovereign, a Half and a Quarter Sovereign, with 25, 15 and 5 Dollars.

1536 and 1953 · The guardians

From Hampton Court to Westminster

On the bridge that Henry VIII had completed over the moat at Hampton Court in 1536 stood ten heraldic beasts, the King’s Beasts. Following their example, James Woodford created ten beasts in plaster for the coronation on 2 June 1953.

At Kew, copies in Portland stone stand guard outside the Palm House; the plaster figures have belonged to Canada since 1959.

The faces of the Crown

One face, seven decades

Mary Gillick showed Elizabeth II with a laurel wreath instead of a crown, and Jody Clark chose the diadem of her coronation in 2015: the first and the fifth of her portraits on British coins.

On British coins the portrait of Charles III is by Martin Jennings; the King approved it himself. The Queen’s British coins remained valid: some 27 billion were in circulation when the first circulating coins with Charles were struck.

Some coins are simply a purchase – others are an event. This three-piece set from 2025 clearly belongs to the second category. With a very low mintage of just 250 pieces worldwide, an immaculate mirror finish and a design that has made collectors' hearts beat faster for centuries, the Australian Sovereign Set unites three generations of a coin class inextricably linked to the history of the British Empire.

The Sovereign – a legend in three sizes

With this exclusive trio, the Perth Mint pays homage to the Gold Sovereign, which, as the first coin ever struck, holds a permanent place in the mint's permanent gold exhibition. The set comprises:

  • Full Sovereign – 7.98 g fine gold, face value in AUD
  • Half Sovereign – 3.99 g fine gold
  • Quarter Sovereign – 1.99 g fine gold

Together, the three pieces yield an impressive fine weight of 12.8 grams of pure gold at a gross weight of 13.96 g. The trilogy is delivered in fitting style in a high-quality original case complete with numbered certificate – a presentation that does full justice to the rarity of this set.

Saint George and the Dragon – a timeless design

The reverse of each individual coin features the famous depiction of Saint George, a Roman soldier and Christian martyr. According to legend, he rescued a princess from the clutches of a fearsome dragon – since then he has embodied courage, integrity and the victory of good over evil. This powerful scene is complemented by the inscription "AUSTRALIA", the year of issue "2025" and the distinctive mintmark "P" of the Perth Mint. The obverse bears the impressive portrait of King Charles III, crafted by artist Dan Thorne – a detail that makes this issue a document of contemporary history.

"Whoever holds a Sovereign in their hands holds a piece of world history – whoever owns this set holds three."

Why Proof quality makes all the difference

Striking in Proof quality is the supreme discipline of coin art. Multiple polished dies, meticulous handwork and a high-gloss mirror background meet frosted reliefs – the result is a depth of contrast that captivates with every angle of light. Such strikes are elaborate, costly and correspondingly rare – qualities that enormously enhance their appeal to collectors.

A set with a collector's soul

With such a strict mintage limit of just 250 pieces worldwide, it should quickly become clear: anyone wishing to add this issue to their collection should not hesitate too long. Compared to classic bullion products such as the Krugerrand or the Vienna Philharmonic, this set plays in a completely different league – it is not a mass-produced item, but a numismatic treasure for enthusiasts who seek the extraordinary.

Gold has been a reliable store of value for over 6,000 years, is available free of VAT and can in principle be sold tax-free after a holding period of one year. In the context of gold coins, however, this set occupies a special position: here it is not the sober material weight alone that counts, but the harmonious interplay of art, history and numismatic rarity. Those who, alongside classic inflation hedging and reliable crisis protection, also nurture a genuine passion for collecting, will find here a trio destined to take centre stage in any display cabinet.
