The leopard’s coat suits its life in trees, in the forest and at night. A young leopard paddles through splashing water.

The leopard

From the desert to the rainforest

  • Desert
  • Mountain forest
  • Rainforest

No other big cat is as widespread: leopards live in some 62 countries across Africa and Eurasia, in deserts, savannas, mountains and rainforests.

They prefer rocky ground with dense bush and riverine forest. The leopard climbs well, spends much of its time in trees and is mostly active at night, as a loner.

Its coat carries dark, irregular spots, the rosettes; the base colour ranges from pale yellow in warm, dry regions to reddish orange in dense forests. Instead of purring, it calls with a rough, rasping sound.

The cheetah

The only one of its genus

Its genus, Acinonyx, has no other living member today. The cheetah needs wide, open land and is mostly active by day, unlike many other cats.

Its coat carries solid, round or oval black spots from 1.9 to 3.8 centimetres; only the throat and belly stay white. The tail ends in four to six black rings.

Cheetahs do not roar; their most common call is a chirp. Females live alone, while males often join up in groups.

Why two patterns

The coat often suits where the cat lives

  • Rosettes in a leopard’s coat, detail of a coin

    Rosette

    For trees, forest and night.

  • Solid spots in a cheetah’s coat, detail of a coin

    Spot

    Black, without a ring.

A study of 35 cat species shows that whether a coat is patterned is linked to the habitat. How intricate and irregular the pattern is also relates to life in trees and to activity at night.

Over the course of evolution, such camouflage adapts comparatively quickly to a way of life. In the grey grass where cheetahs often live, their spots can take up the shadows of the blades and let the animals merge with their surroundings.

Rare coats

A black panther can be a leopard

Leopards with melanism, that is with almost black fur, are often called black panthers. Black cheetahs, by contrast, are not known.

In the rare king cheetah, the spots merge into blotches and stripes. It is not a species of its own but carries a rare variant of the gene Taqpep, which shapes the variations of the tabby pattern in domestic cats.

Young cheetahs wear a coat of their own as well: a thick, silvery grey mantle along the back, which they shed at about three months of age.

“Big Five Baby” Leopard 2026 – 1/200 oz Fine Gold, strictly limited

  • Strictly limited: only 1,000 pieces worldwide – an extremely low mintage for a gold piece of this size category
  • Growth opportunities: high value appreciation potential due to the strict limitation and the persistently strong demand for micro gold
  • Investment character: physical fine gold whose value tracks the gold price – tradable worldwide and resellable at any time
  • Minting quality: the highest possible quality Proof (PP) with mirror-polished background
  • Design: a young leopard padding through splashing water – spotted coat, paws and whiskers finely engraved
  • Material / fineness: 0.16 g fine gold, fineness 999.9/1,000 – purest 999.9/1,000 gold without alloy additives
  • Issuing country: Republic of Liberia, face value 25 Dollars
  • Manufacturer: exclusive edition by Kettner Edelmetalle, country of origin Germany

With this edition you secure genuine gold in one of the smallest formats the market has to offer at all. The value of this coin is based primarily on the fine gold it contains and moves with the gold price. The fact that it is also a sought-after, strictly limited collector's coin from the “Big Five Baby” series further reinforces this value foundation.

The design: Africa's young in purest fine gold

The obverse shows a young leopard caught in motion. The front paws set down into the water, fine droplets splash upward, the spotted coat is engraved dot by dot. Ears, whiskers, the large eyes – remarkably three-dimensional for a diameter of just 14.00 mm. Diamond and zigzag bands frame the image on the left and right, reminiscent of African ornamentation. The inscription “BIG FIVE BABY LEOPARD” runs along the top, with “1/200 OZ 9999 FINE GOLD” below.

The reverse brings together Africa's young animals on a stylized map of the continent: elephant, rhinoceros, lion cub, giraffe and leopard baby. Also shown are the denomination “25 DOLLARS”, the year of issue 2026, and the issuing state “Republic of Liberia”. The term Big Five originally comes from big-game hunting; today the five animals represent the fascination of African wilderness. The African Big Five series has for years been one of the most closely followed design worlds in modern numismatics – the Baby variant reinterprets it in a micro format.

A genuine rarity: mintage of just 1,000 pieces

The decisive figure in the minting order is 1,000. There will be no more. This very low mintage makes the edition a genuine rarity, since many well-known gold coins are issued in five- or six-figure quantities. Such limitations meet a growing group of buyers seeking affordable micro gold. This is exactly where the much-cited value appreciation potential comes from: what is minted today in small numbers cannot be increased tomorrow. Of course, this does not constitute a concrete promise of returns – precious metal prices are constantly moving.

Proof – minting artistry at the highest quality

The coin is struck in the top quality Proof. Multiple polished dies, carefully prepared blanks and several strikes under high pressure create the characteristic contrast: mirror-polished background, matte relief, genuine depth effect. Therefore, only handle the piece by the reeded edge or with gloves. It is delivered protected in a coincard – keeping the sensitive Proof surface permanently flawless.

Fine gold is the substance

The real reason to buy lies not in the image but in the metal. Gold is the oldest currency in the world, a proven store of value for over 6,000 years, and it has never had a value of zero. It possesses intrinsic value, is recognized worldwide as a means of payment and exchange, is highly liquid, and can be converted back into cash at any time. In the gold coins category you will find all weight classes from 1/200 ounce up to a full ounce. Those who regularly acquire small amounts noticeably build up substance over the years – small quantities of gold add up to considerable wealth that can also be passed on to the next generation. Topics such as inflation hedge and crisis protection traditionally resonate with physical gold, though they are not the main focus with this fine coin. An added benefit: investment gold is traded VAT-free in Germany, and profits from a later sale are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.

Technical data at a glance

  • Fine weight: 1/200 oz = 0.16 g fine gold
  • Fineness: 999.9/1,000
  • Diameter: 14.00 mm
  • Edge design: reeded
  • Face value: 25 Dollars – issuing country Republic of Liberia
  • Year of issue: 2026, Proof condition, new
  • Mintage: only 1,000 pieces, packaging coincard, series “Big Five Baby”

Compared with a 1-ounce gold coin from the classic Big Five series, this micro format is far more accessible: you acquire genuine fine gold with a manageable outlay, while larger denominations carry a lower premium per gram. Both paths lead to the same goal – physical gold in your own possession. When reselling, the rarity of a mintage of only 1,000 pieces comes additionally into play here.

Despite the charming design, what you are acquiring here is fully-fledged investment gold: minted fine gold whose value tracks the gold price – and which, thanks to its small denomination, can also be given as a genuine investment for a birth, christening, or anniversary.
