Big Five · South Africa 2026

Rosette and spot, two coats for two worlds.Big Five 2026,the leopard in gold.

The leopard’s coat suits its life in trees, in the forest and at night. Among the Big Five, the leopard is known as the elusive one.

The leopard

From the desert to the rainforest

  • Desert
  • Mountain forest
  • Rainforest

No other big cat is as widespread: leopards live in some 62 countries across Africa and Eurasia, in deserts, savannas, mountains and rainforests.

They prefer rocky ground with dense bush and riverine forest. The leopard climbs well, spends much of its time in trees and is mostly active at night, as a loner.

Its coat carries dark, irregular spots, the rosettes; the base colour ranges from pale yellow in warm, dry regions to reddish orange in dense forests. Instead of purring, it calls with a rough, rasping sound.

The cheetah

The only one of its genus

Its genus, Acinonyx, has no other living member today. The cheetah needs wide, open land and is mostly active by day, unlike many other cats.

Its coat carries solid, round or oval black spots from 1.9 to 3.8 centimetres; only the throat and belly stay white. The tail ends in four to six black rings.

Cheetahs do not roar; their most common call is a chirp. Females live alone, while males often join up in groups.

Why two patterns

The coat often suits where the cat lives

  • Rosettes in a leopard’s coat, detail of a coin

    Rosette

    For trees, forest and night.

  • Solid spots in a cheetah’s coat, detail of a coin

    Spot

    Black, without a ring.

A study of 35 cat species shows that whether a coat is patterned is linked to the habitat. How intricate and irregular the pattern is also relates to life in trees and to activity at night.

Over the course of evolution, such camouflage adapts comparatively quickly to a way of life. In the grey grass where cheetahs often live, their spots can take up the shadows of the blades and let the animals merge with their surroundings.

Rare coats

A black panther can be a leopard

Leopards with melanism, that is with almost black fur, are often called black panthers. Black cheetahs, by contrast, are not known.

In the rare king cheetah, the spots merge into blotches and stripes. It is not a species of its own but carries a rare variant of the gene Taqpep, which shapes the variations of the tabby pattern in domestic cats.

Young cheetahs wear a coat of their own as well: a thick, silvery grey mantle along the back, which they shed at about three months of age.

Big Five · South Africa

Two coins, one face

The motif side shows the leopard with the coat of arms below it, together with SOUTH AFRICA, BIG FIVE and the year. The other side divides the face: only two coins side by side make a whole portrait.

Place many coins next to each other and a whole row of faces appears. Today, Big Five means the five animals that wildlife lovers and safari guests want to see in the wild.

There are coins you buy. And there are coins you secure before they are gone forever. The 1/4 oz Gold Big Five III Leopard 2026 undoubtedly belongs to the second category. With a mintage of only 2,000 pieces worldwide, this South African coin is one of the most sought-after gold coins of the year – and it will remain so.

The Leopard: Silent Power in Pure Gold

What makes the leopard so fascinating? It is the most mysterious of the "Big Five". While the elephant and the lion dominate the savannah, the leopard moves silently through the night. It is precisely this elegance, this understated power, that the coin's design captures in breathtaking detail. The rosettes of its fur, its piercing gaze, its sinewy muscles – all of this has been immortalized by the engravers of the South African Mint with masterful precision in 999.9 fine gold.

The Proof quality highlights every single detail. Mirror-polished surfaces contrast with the frosted reliefs of the leopard, creating a three-dimensional effect that is simply impressive. You have to hold this coin in your hand to understand why collectors around the world are searching for it.

The Big Five Series: A Numismatic Phenomenon

Since its introduction, the Big Five series has become one of the most sought-after collecting areas in modern numismatics. The first two series alone generated great enthusiasm – and in some cases significant value increases on the secondary market. The third series continues this tradition and is likely to make collectors' hearts beat faster once again.

"South Africa's Big Five are among the most iconic animal designs in the world of coins. Whoever owns the complete series holds a piece of the African soul in their hands."

Why This Particular Coin?

The answer is simple – and complex at the same time. Let the facts speak for themselves:

  1. Extreme rarity: 2,000 pieces for the entire world market. That is vanishingly small. For comparison: common bullion coins such as the Krugerrand are minted in the millions.
  2. The finest minting craftsmanship: The Proof quality turns every single coin into a work of art, delivered in a high-quality case with a certificate of authenticity.
  3. Series effect: Collectors who already own other issues from the Big Five series will inevitably need this coin – further driving up demand.
  4. Intrinsic value: 7.78 grams of purest gold form the unshakeable foundation of this rarity.

Gold – Timeless, VAT-Free, and Crisis-Proof

Of course, the collector's value takes center stage with this coin. But let's not forget: the foundation is gold – humanity's oldest currency, which has served as a store of value for over 6,000 years. Gold has never had a value of zero. It is tradable worldwide, serves as an inflation hedge, and offers crisis protection in uncertain times. In addition, investment gold is VAT-free in Germany – an advantage that should not be underestimated. And anyone who holds their gold coin for at least one year can generally realize profits from the sale tax-free.
