Big Five · South Africa 2026

Rosette and spot, two coats for two worlds.Big Five 2026,two coins in one capsule.

The leopard’s coat suits its life in trees, in the forest and at night. Among the Big Five, the leopard is known as the elusive one.

The leopard

From the desert to the rainforest

  • Desert
  • Mountain forest
  • Rainforest

No other big cat is as widespread: leopards live in some 62 countries across Africa and Eurasia, in deserts, savannas, mountains and rainforests.

They prefer rocky ground with dense bush and riverine forest. The leopard climbs well, spends much of its time in trees and is mostly active at night, as a loner.

Its coat carries dark, irregular spots, the rosettes; the base colour ranges from pale yellow in warm, dry regions to reddish orange in dense forests. Instead of purring, it calls with a rough, rasping sound.

The cheetah

The only one of its genus

Its genus, Acinonyx, has no other living member today. The cheetah needs wide, open land and is mostly active by day, unlike many other cats.

Its coat carries solid, round or oval black spots from 1.9 to 3.8 centimetres; only the throat and belly stay white. The tail ends in four to six black rings.

Cheetahs do not roar; their most common call is a chirp. Females live alone, while males often join up in groups.

Why two patterns

The coat often suits where the cat lives

  • Rosettes in a leopard’s coat, detail of a coin

    Rosette

    For trees, forest and night.

  • Solid spots in a cheetah’s coat, detail of a coin

    Spot

    Black, without a ring.

A study of 35 cat species shows that whether a coat is patterned is linked to the habitat. How intricate and irregular the pattern is also relates to life in trees and to activity at night.

Over the course of evolution, such camouflage adapts comparatively quickly to a way of life. In the grey grass where cheetahs often live, their spots can take up the shadows of the blades and let the animals merge with their surroundings.

Rare coats

A black panther can be a leopard

Leopards with melanism, that is with almost black fur, are often called black panthers. Black cheetahs, by contrast, are not known.

In the rare king cheetah, the spots merge into blotches and stripes. It is not a species of its own but carries a rare variant of the gene Taqpep, which shapes the variations of the tabby pattern in domestic cats.

Young cheetahs wear a coat of their own as well: a thick, silvery grey mantle along the back, which they shed at about three months of age.

Big Five · South Africa

Two coins, one face

The motif side shows the leopard with the coat of arms below it, together with SOUTH AFRICA, BIG FIVE and the year. The other side divides the face: only two coins side by side make a whole portrait.

Place many coins next to each other and a whole row of faces appears. Today, Big Five means the five animals that wildlife lovers and safari guests want to see in the wild.

What happens when the highest minting artistry, one of the world's most fascinating animal designs, and a mintage of only 100 pieces come together? A numismatic masterpiece is born, unlike any other. The 2 x 1/4 oz Gold Big Five III Leopard 2026 in the double capsule is among the most sought-after collector's coins of our time – and it is already sold out.

The Leopard: Africa's Most Elegant Hunter in Pure Gold

The leopard is considered the most mysterious member of the legendary Big Five. Silent, powerful, nearly invisible – and yet of overwhelming beauty. The Rand Refinery has captured precisely these qualities on the coin's surface in an impressive manner. Every rosette in the coat, every muscle strand, the predator's watchful gaze: all of this is expressed with a brilliance that is simply breathtaking, thanks to the Proof minting quality. The mirror-polished surfaces contrast with the frosted raised design details, creating an almost three-dimensional effect.

The double capsule variant presents two individual 1/4 oz coins in a shared, high-quality capsule – a concept that is convincing both aesthetically and numismatically. Each coin carries a face value of 50 Rand and is therefore official legal tender of the Republic of South Africa.

Why This Edition Is So Exceptionally Rare

Let this number sink in: Only 100 pieces worldwide. One hundred. Not a thousand, not ten thousand – one hundred. In a world where millions of investors and collectors are searching for first-class gold coins, such a strictly limited edition is an absolute rarity. For comparison: the regular Big Five Leopard coin in 1/4 oz was minted with a mintage of 1,000 pieces – ten times as many. The double capsule version therefore plays in a completely different league.

"Scarcity is the fuel of collecting. What hardly anyone possesses, everyone desires." – An old piece of wisdom among numismatists that applies perfectly to this edition.

Finest Gold from South Africa – 999.9/1,000

Gold has been humanity's ultimate store of value for over 6,000 years. It has survived every crisis, outlasted every currency, and weathered every storm of history. This double capsule edition consists of the purest fine gold with a fineness of 999.9/1,000 – it simply cannot get any purer. The total fine weight of both coins is 15.55 grams of pure gold that you can hold in your hands. Tangible. Real. Imperishable.

As a buyer of investment gold, you enjoy a decisive advantage: gold is VAT-exempt in Germany. And those who hold their gold coins for at least one year can generally realise profits from the sale tax-free – a privilege that makes this precious metal particularly attractive.

The Rand Refinery – South Africa's Traditional House of Gold Minting

Behind this coin stands none other than the Rand Refinery, one of the oldest and most renowned gold refining and minting facilities in the world. Since 1920, it has been processing South African gold into world-class coins and bars. The Krugerrand – the best-selling gold coin of all time – comes from the same house. Anyone who owns a Rand Refinery coin holds a piece of gold history in their hands.

Who Is This Coin Made For?

  1. Passionate collectors who seek the extraordinary and know that strict limitations can boost the value of a coin over the long term
  2. Big Five enthusiasts who wish to crown their collection with the rarest variant of the Leopard edition
  3. Strategic investors who, beyond the pure gold value, also appreciate the numismatic appreciation potential
  4. Discerning gift-givers looking for an unforgettable gift of lasting value

More Than Just a Coin – A Statement

This double capsule is far more than a precious metals product. It is a commitment to the beauty of nature, to the craftsmanship of South African minting masters, and to the timeless value of gold as an inflation hedge and crisis protection. Each piece is delivered in a fine case and naturally comes with a certificate of authenticity – your guarantee of authenticity and quality.

The Big Five series has rapidly become one of the most popular collecting series in the world. And within this series, the double capsule variant in PP with its very low mintage represents the absolute pinnacle. Those who were fortunate enough to secure one of the 100 pieces own a piece of numismatic exclusivity that will only become harder to find in the years and decades to come.

Gold has shone for millennia – and the leopard on this coin will preserve that brilliance for eternity.
