The Dramatic Story of the SS Tilawa – The "Titanic of the Indian Ocean"
On 23 November 1942, a tragic chapter was written into maritime history. The SS Tilawa, carrying 950 people and 60 tonnes of silver bars belonging to the British government, was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-29 on its route from Bombay to Durban. After the first strike, the ship fought bravely against the waves. But a second torpedo sealed its fate. 281 people lost their lives in the waters of the Indian Ocean.
The precious silver sank with the ship to a depth of over 2,500 metres. For decades, this treasure lay untouched on the ocean floor – until modern salvage technology made it possible in 2017 to recover large portions of this historic precious metal. Today, part of this recovered silver is used for this exclusive Krugerrand edition, making each individual coin a tangible piece of contemporary history.

Especially in times of rising inflation, the true value of physical precious metals becomes apparent. Silver serves not only as a store of value, but also benefits from the steadily growing industrial demand. From smartphone production to the solar industry – silver is needed everywhere as an indispensable raw material.
With the Tilawa Privy Mark, you are acquiring more than just a bullion coin. You are securing a piece of history that connects the dramatic events of the Second World War with the timeless value stability of precious metal.
