0.5 g Gold Prehistoric Life Dunkleosteus 2023 – Minted Fine Gold in Proof Quality

  • Minting quality: Highest minting quality Proof (PP) – deep black mirrored surfaces meet a finely matted, sculptural relief design.
  • Strictly limited: mintage limited worldwide to just 2,000 pieces – a genuine rarity in the small gold segment.
  • Value potential: noticeable appreciation potential thanks to strict limitation and a highly sought-after design series.
  • Material & fineness: 0.5 grams of purest gold, with a fineness of 999.9/1000 (Au 999.9).
  • Design: vivid relief of the prehistoric armored fish Dunkleosteus with wide-open jaws, surrounded by rising air bubbles.
  • Manufacturer: minted by the tradition-rich German mint B.H. Mayer.
  • Country of origin: official issue of the Democratic Republic of the Congo with a face value of 100 Francs.
  • Investment gold: physical gold investment in a convenient denomination, whose value is based on the gold price.

The Prehistoric Life series brings long-extinct prehistoric creatures back to life in fine gold – and the eleventh issue of 2023 belongs to one of the most impressive predators in Earth's history: the Dunkleosteus. This armored marine hunter roamed the shallow primeval seas roughly 380 to 360 million years ago, reaching a body length of up to six meters and ranking among the top predators of its time. It is precisely this primal force that the design captures.

A design that emerges from the primeval sea

On the obverse, the armored fish glides through the water with its mouth open and jaw plates visible. Fine inscriptions read "PREHISTORIC LIFE", "DUNKLEOSTEUS", the geological classification "380–360 MIO YEARS BC", as well as the year of issue 2023. The realistic texture of the skin and the rising air bubbles appear especially three-dimensional in the Proof minting quality: the matted animal stands out sculpturally against the high-gloss mirrored background. On the reverse, B.H. Mayer mints the coat of arms of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, flanked by the mottos "Justice", "Paix" and "Travail", with the fine weight and face value of 100 Francs below. The coin is delivered protected in a coin capsule.

Small fine gold, genuine investment character

Even though the design fascinates – the actual substance of these 0.5-gram gold coins is the fine gold they contain. The value is based primarily on the pure gold and develops in line with the gold price. This allows wealth to be built up step by step in physical precious metal: small amounts of gold add up over the years to a considerable holding. Gold has been regarded as a proven store of value for over 6,000 years, is tradable worldwide, and can be resold at any time – qualities that many investors value as inflation hedge and crisis protection. Even as a gift, the investment aspect remains: whoever gives this as a present for a christening, birthday, or wedding is not presenting a mere decorative item, but full-fledged investment gold.

Why the low mintage matters

With a mintage of only 2,000 pieces, this issue is extremely scarce worldwide. The strict limitation, combined with the coveted prehistoric series and the elaborate Proof production, lends the collector's coin additional scarcity beyond its pure material value. The stronger the demand for such a rarity, the more interesting the appreciation potential becomes over time.
