Some coins need no lengthy introduction. The Gold Libertad is one of them. Since 1981, Mexico has issued its bullion coin featuring the winged goddess of victory - five years before the American Eagle. The 2026 year of issue in the 1/4 ounce format brings this heritage into a format that is very well suited for gradual wealth building. Among the internationally recognized gold coins, it is one of the bullion coins with the lowest mintages. This makes it equally interesting for investors and collectors alike.

Victoria, volcanoes and the coat-of-arms eagle: a design with history

At the center stands the "Ángel de la Independencia". The monument was inaugurated in 1910 for the hundredth anniversary of independence and has towered over the Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City ever since. The bronze figure holds a laurel wreath and a broken chain in her hands, both symbolizing the end of Spanish colonial rule. On the coin, the Libertad goddess of victory hovers on her column capital in a slight three-quarter view. Behind her rise the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, while agave and nopal cactus grow in the foreground. The inscription states everything one needs to know: "1/4 ONZA – ORO PURO – 2026 LEY .999", along with the mint mark "Mo" of the mint.

The reverse shows the national coat of arms of the Estados Unidos Mexicanos. An eagle perched on a cactus devours a serpent. According to Aztec founding legend, this very sign indicated the place where Tenochtitlan was to be founded. Oak and laurel branches frame the scene, enclosed by a beaded border. Since 2000, the 1-ounce coin has additionally featured historical eagle depictions surrounding the coat of arms. The smaller denominations, such as this gold coin, have retained the classic coat of arms.

Why choose the Libertad in particular?

The mintage figures speak for themselves. Maple Leaf and Krugerrand are minted in large quantities year after year. The quarter-ounce Libertad, by contrast, has had mintages for many earlier years of issue in only the four-digit range. The series is issued by the Banco de México. Although the coin bears no imprinted face value, it is nevertheless official legal tender in Mexico. This combines two things: it is a recognized bullion coin from Mexico and at the same time holds genuine numismatic appeal. Anyone who has been collecting years of issue for a while will find the perfect addition with 2026.

Compared with other quarter-ounce coins

The South African Krugerrand is made of 22-karat gold with a copper content, making it particularly scratch-resistant. The Libertad, by contrast, relies on 999 fine gold, which is softer and has a rich shine. The coin capsule reliably protects the sensitive surface. Due to the small mintage, the premium is usually somewhat higher than with mass-produced coins. In return, you own a coin that is not available everywhere. Compared to the full ounce, the 1/4 ounce is more flexible: anyone who later wants to sell only part of their holdings can do so in smaller increments.

Gold, the oldest currency in the world

Even in ancient Egypt, the yellow metal served as a standard in trade. Kings and emperors wore it as a symbol of their power, and merchants on the Silk Road used it as payment. In the 19th and 20th centuries, paper money under the gold standard was directly tied to the precious metal. For over 6,000 years, gold has served as a store of value, and it has never had a value of zero. Central banks can increase fiat money at will, but not gold. Central banks in particular are among the largest holders of gold in the world, which says a great deal about their trust in their own paper money. If silver is the little brother, then gold is the big one.

Currencies come and go. Gold remains and quietly protects against loss of purchasing power, political turmoil and economic crises.

As crisis protection, the Libertad excels with high liquidity and worldwide tradability. If needed, it can quickly be converted into cash, and in an emergency it can even serve as a medium of exchange. Gold does not rust and its properties remain unchanged even across generations. This makes it well suited for retirement provision and for passing on to future generations.

Tax advantages for investors in Germany

As investment gold, the 1/4 ounce Gold Libertad 2026 is exempt from VAT. Profits from the sale are generally tax-free for private investors after a holding period of at least one year. Two more good reasons to choose the goddess of victory from Mexico.
