Some designs remain in the collective memory. The "1 Deutsche Mark" is one of them. This Fractional Set brings the iconic image back from the wallets of the economic miracle years – graduated threefold, in the purest gold and in a minting quality otherwise known only from prestige issues. Among the current gold coins of the Symbolism series, this trio is the most compact way to own the design in several sizes at once.
The design: denomination, oak foliage and the Federal Eagle
At the center of the obverse stands the large digit "1", flanked by two oak branches, each with a sculpturally shaped acorn. Oak foliage has for generations been regarded as a German symbol of permanence; here it is worked out down to the individual leaf vein. Beneath it the inscription "DEUTSCHE MARK" and the minting year 2026. The other side belongs to the Federal Eagle: layered plumage, open beak, powerfully spread talons. A fine beaded circle frames both sides, and the reeded edge completes the classic look. The legend states the respective ounce denomination together with the fine gold content as well as the issuing details of the Republic of Liberia.
The original design comes from Josef Bernhart of Munich: his 1-DM circulation coin entered circulation on 18 December 1950 and remained legal tender until 1 January 2002. Over five decades, this image passed through millions of German hands, across every year of issue and every mint. In 2001, the D-Mark was even given its own official gold coin as a farewell, issued to mark the introduction of the euro. Herein lies the emotional power of this series – anyone who once owned the Mark themselves recognizes it instantly.
Reverse Proof – the Proof finish reimagined in mirror image
In the classic Proof finish, the fields are mirrored while the relief appears matte. With Reverse Proof, it is the other way around: the design shines with a mirror finish, while the background remains silky matte. As a result, the eagle and the oak foliage seem to step right out of the surface, with every feather catching the light. Because this process is more elaborate and wears the dies out faster, it is almost always reserved for small series – one reason why Proof strikes in this finish are so highly sought after among connoisseurs. Please handle the coins only by the edge or within the capsule.
Three denominations, one case
The set combines three strikes of the same design in decreasing size: the 1/10 ounce as the showpiece, plus the 1/20 ounce and the 1/50 ounce. Together they amount to 5.29 g of fine gold. The smallest gold coin in particular is scarcely obtainable individually, which further heightens the appeal of the ensemble. Everything is delivered protected in a case – ready for presentation and suitable as a gift with real substance.
Why this micro-mintage electrifies collectors
In the collector's market, mintage decides almost everything. With a limitation of 250 pieces worldwide, the math is quickly done: there can never be enough sets for all interested parties. Experience shows that micro-mintages migrate into permanent collections and thereafter rarely resurface on the market. It is precisely this scarcity that fuels the value-appreciation potential of this issue.
- Double substance: collector's value through the very low mintage, material value through pure fine gold.
- Tax-attractive: investment gold is exempt from VAT; after a holding period of at least one year, profits from the sale are generally tax-free.
- Globally tradable: gold is recognized on every continent, highly liquid, and can be converted back into cash at any time.
- Series logic: a self-contained trio rather than individual pieces – ideal for a systematically built collection.
- Contemporary history: a piece of German monetary history, compact in a keepsake box.
Gold is humanity's oldest currency. It has outlived all others, possesses an intrinsic value, and will never lose its lustre.
Compared to related issues
The design also appeared in 2026 as a full ounce in gold, as silver coins in several denominations, and as small minted bars. Anyone choosing the full ounce gets the maximum precious metal mass in a single piece; anyone choosing this trio receives three different diameters, the same design language in three formats, and a significantly lower entry point into a rarity. Compared to classic bullion coins such as the Krugerrand, which is produced in the millions each year, the contrast becomes even clearer: here, only 250 sets are made – worldwide. The one drawback of such a scarce series is obvious: whoever hesitates will be too late.
Gold – the foundation of every collection
For over 6,000 years, gold has served as a store of value, from ancient Egypt through the Silk Road to the gold standard of the 19th and 20th centuries. It possesses intrinsic value, has never been worth zero, and is scarce because its supply cannot be expanded at will – unlike fiat money, which central banks can print. The fact that these very central banks hold the largest gold reserves in the world speaks for itself. Physical precious metal also serves, quite incidentally, as an inflation hedge and as crisis protection. With this set, however, the focus is on collector's appeal: a legendary design, the finest minting artistry, and a minimal mintage. Secure your piece before all 250 sets have disappeared into permanent collections.
