Vreneli 20 francs, front

Gold 900/1,000 from the Bern mint. The 20-franc piece comes with 28 dates from 1897 to 1949; your piece bears one of them.

Where the year is

The date below, the B beside it

Below the coat of arms in its oak branch stands the date, to its right the mint mark B for Bern. A beaded border frames both sides.

On our photo of the value side the spot is empty: your piece bears one of the dates from 1897 to 1949. Counting L 1935 too, that makes 29 years.

Year by year

Four fifths from five years

Swissmint lists the mintage of every year. Until 1916, each year brought between 100,000 and 750,000 pieces. A good four fifths of all pieces bear one of five dates: 1927, 1930, L 1935, 1947 or 1949.

L 1935

Dated 1935, struck 1945 to 1947

A good third of all 20-franc pieces bear the date L 1935. These pieces were only struck from 1945 to 1947, from the gold holdings of the National Bank: the holdings were to shrink, and demand for gold coins was high.

The date 1935 shows that the pieces have the fineness set by the Coinage Act of 1931; the devaluation of 1936 laid down no fixed gold parity. To the left of the date stands an L for lingot, ingot. It sets these pieces apart from those of the year 1935 and underlines their character as a trade good.

In March 1947 the Federal Council lifted the backdating. The 20-franc pieces that followed bear their true year, 1947 and 1949, and on the edge the legend AD / LEGEM ANNI / MCMXXXI.

On the edge

22 stars on the edge

The edge of the 20-franc piece is struck too, with raised stars. Only the years 1947 and 1949 bear a raised legend instead of the 22 stars.

  • 20 francs 1947 and 1949AD / LEGEM ANNI / MCMXXXI, six stars before, one after

Drawn after the description by Swissmint, each edge unrolled. The lengths are in proportion to the diameters.

Model from Neuchâtel, dies from Paris

Fritz Landry created the model in Neuchâtel; the original dies came from Ernest Paulin Tasset in Paris. The pieces were struck in Bern; the coins of Swissmint bear the B for Bern to this day.

Per franc of face value the Vreneli carries about 290 milligrams of fine gold, reckoned as 5.807 g divided by 20; the same holds for the 10 and the 100-franc piece. Dimensions and weights after Swissmint.

The year on the coin

Three places reward a second look: the date on the value side, the B for Bern and the edge with stars, reeding or lettering.

The whole story of the Vreneli

Vreneli Gold 20 Franken Helvetia Münze

  • Besonderheit: Schweizer Umlaufmünze mit Wertzuwachs
  • Investitionsziel: Wertanlage / Rendite, Inflationsschutz, Krisenschutz
