Libertas 20 francs, front with the diadem LIBERTAS
Before the Vreneli came in 1897, the 20-franc piece showed Libertas. The case holds ten of her twelve years.
Where the year is
The date below the shield
On the Libertas the date stands at the bottom of the value side, below the shield with the Swiss cross, above which there is a star. The case holds ten different dates.

1883The date 1883

1896The date 1896
1883 to 1896
Before the Vreneli: the Libertas
The 20-franc pieces of 1883 to 1896, which the trade calls Helvetia, show a classical female head, Libertas, and no Vreneli.
Albert Walch created the model of the portrait side, Christian Bühler that of the value side, both in Bern; the engraving was done by Karl Schwenzer in Stuttgart. The diadem bears the word LIBERTAS, and CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA stands to the left and right of the head. The value side shows the Swiss cross in a shield, with a five-pointed star above it.
Swissmint counts twelve years of striking with 1,750,044 pieces in all; none were struck in 1884 and 1885. Your set contains ten of them. Missing are 1887 with 176 and 1888 with 4,224 pieces.
After Swissmint. None were struck in 1884 and 1885.

Model from Neuchâtel, dies from Paris
The Vreneli, which followed the Libertas in 1897, was made in three places: Fritz Landry created the model in Neuchâtel, the original dies came from Ernest Paulin Tasset in Paris, and it was struck in Bern.

Gold as an Investment and Store of Value
Gold is the oldest currency in the world and has been valued for thousands of years for its durability and brilliance. Profits from the sale of gold are tax-free in Germany after a holding period of at least one year, and since gold is exempt from VAT, it is excellently suited as an asset class. Central banks hold gold worldwide as a reserve currency, underscoring its importance and stability. In times of political and economic uncertainty, gold serves as a safe haven and reliable crisis protection.
The Significance of Gold in History
Gold was already used as currency in ancient Egypt and was an essential part of international trade along the Silk Road. It symbolized wealth and power and was a central element of the gold standard system. Gold has a low correlation to other asset classes and contributes to portfolio diversification. It is durable, globally tradable, and is used as a medium of exchange in times of currency instability.
