Since 1871, St George and the dragon have appeared on the Sovereigns of every monarch.

1489 · Henry VII

A gold coin called Sovereign

In October 1489, Henry VII gave a new gold coin the name Sovereign. It was larger than anything England had issued before.

Under George III, the new Sovereign of 20 shillings replaced the guinea of 21 shillings. Benedetto Pistrucci, an Italian gem engraver, created St George and the dragon for it; in 1821 George received a sword in place of the broken lance.

1855 to 1923 · Branch mints

The “chief coin of the world”

That is what the Sovereign was called in the 19th century; it was accepted even in Brazil.

The Royal Mint also struck it at branch mints: Sydney from 1855, Melbourne 1872, Perth 1899, Ottawa 1908, Bombay 1918 and Pretoria 1923, almost 500 million pieces in all.

The Royal Canadian Mint, the Perth Mint and the South African Mint descend from these branch mints.

Perth · until 1931 and today

A new St George from Perth

Until 1931, Perth produced 106 million Sovereigns, each with Pistrucci’s St George.

Today the Australian Sovereign of the Perth Mint shows a new design: Jennifer McKenna draws an unclothed rider swinging his sword above the dragon. On the value side is Charles III, after Dan Thorne.

The Royal Mint · 2026

A mark beneath the portrait

According to the Royal Mint, a Sovereign measures 22.05 millimetres, a Half Sovereign 19.30 and a Double Sovereign 28.40.

Beneath the portrait of Charles III, the 2026 issue carries a security feature, a latent image in the round field.

1536 and 1953 · The guardians

From Hampton Court to Westminster

On the bridge that Henry VIII had completed over the moat at Hampton Court in 1536 stood ten heraldic beasts, the King’s Beasts. Following their example, James Woodford created ten beasts in plaster for the coronation on 2 June 1953.

At Kew, copies in Portland stone stand guard outside the Palm House; the plaster figures have belonged to Canada since 1959.

The faces of the Crown

One face, seven decades

Mary Gillick showed Elizabeth II with a laurel wreath instead of a crown, and Jody Clark chose the diadem of her coronation in 2015: the first and the fifth of her portraits on British coins.

On British coins the portrait of Charles III is by Martin Jennings; the King approved it himself. The Queen’s British coins remained valid: some 27 billion were in circulation when the first circulating coins with Charles were struck.

1 Pound Gold Coin Sovereign Charles III. 2026 – British Tradition Meets Modern Security

  • Investment objective: First-class bullion coin with considerable value appreciation potential
  • Design: The legendary St. George and the Dragon on the obverse, portrait of King Charles III on the reverse
  • Material / Fineness: High-quality gold with a fineness of 916.67/1,000 in classic yellow gold alloy
  • Manufacturer: Produced by the world-renowned The British Royal Mint
  • Country of origin: Great Britain – home of Europe's most traditional gold coin series

The Gold Sovereign coin is undoubtedly one of the most iconic gold coins in the world. With the 2026 issue, the Royal Mint presents a very special edition: for the first time, the minting returns to the traditional yellow gold alloy, after rose gold was used in previous years. A milestone for collectors and investors alike!

Over 500 Years of Minting History – A Coin That Makes History

The Sovereign looks back on a history spanning more than five hundred years. No other European gold coin series can boast such an uninterrupted tradition. Since 1817, the world-famous design of St. George battling the dragon has adorned the obverse – a design that ranks among the most treasured coin motifs of all time. The year 2026 is prominently displayed beneath the dynamic battle scene, framed by the Latin motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense".

Gold has been a proven store of value for over 6,000 years. It has outlasted every currency and withstood every crisis. And it is precisely this timeless stability that the Sovereign embodies like almost no other coin.

State-of-the-Art Security Features for Maximum Protection

The 2026 issue sets new standards in counterfeit protection. For the first time, three cutting-edge security features are combined:

  1. Latent image: An optically shifting security motif on the reverse that becomes visible depending on the viewing angle
  2. Halftone effect: A fine dot pattern in the edge area creates depth and is nearly impossible to reproduce
  3. Micro-engraving on the coin edge: Visible only under strong magnification – a highly precise anti-counterfeiting feature

This combination makes the Sovereign 2026 the most secure issue in the entire history of this legendary series!

The Portrait of King Charles III – A New Chapter Begins

The reverse features the striking profile portrait of King Charles III. The change of design following the new monarch's accession to the throne lends this issue special historical significance. Surrounded by the Latin inscription "CHARLES III · DEI · GRA · REX · FID · DEF", the royal portrait is presented in flawless minting quality. The fine halftone effect in the background underscores the artistic design.

The Sovereign is not simply a coin – it is a piece of living history that you can hold in your hands.
