Double Sovereign 2027: The Royal Double from the Royal Mint

  • Investment objective: Bullion coin with higher appreciation potential – made for long-term wealth building.
  • Design: Pistrucci's Saint George battling the dragon, framed by the micro-text of the Order of the Garter; the obverse features the portrait of King Charles III.
  • Material / fineness: 22 carat gold with 916.67/1,000 fineness, struck in classic yellow gold – 14.64 grams of fine gold at 15.97 grams gross weight.
  • Manufacturer: Produced by the renowned mint The British Royal Mint.
  • Country of origin: United Kingdom

Some coins are bought for their metal value. Others for their history. The 2 Pound Sovereign gold coin Charles III 2027 – known in Britain simply as the "Double Sovereign" – combines both in a diameter of 28.40 millimeters. It weighs exactly double a classic 1 Pound Sovereign, making it one of the most impressive denominations the Gold Sovereign has ever produced. Anyone seeking British gold coins with tradition will find a true heavyweight here.

The Dragon Slayer: A design that has captivated since 1817

On the reverse, he rides again: Saint George, clad only in a helmet and flowing cloak, short sword in hand, atop a rearing horse. Beneath the hooves, the dragon writhes. This scene was designed by the Italian gem-engraver and medalist Benedetto Pistrucci, whose initials "B.P." appear to the right of the year 2027. Since the birth of the modern Sovereign in 1817, his design has been considered the epitome of British coin artistry. Encircling the design, finely engraved as micro-text, runs the motto of the Order of the Garter: "HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE" – shame on him who thinks evil of it.

The obverse shows the official coin portrait of King Charles III, created by British sculptor Martin Jennings (signature "MJ"). The monarch faces left – unlike his mother Elizabeth II on her coins. He is surrounded by the legend "CHARLES III DEI GRA REX FID DEF": Charles III, by the Grace of God King, Defender of the Faith. Few inscriptions could be more fitting. After all, gold is not without reason called the money of God.

Three security features that make life hard for counterfeiters

  • Micro-text: The Garter motto on the reverse is engraved in tiny lettering.
  • Halftone pattern: A fine dot pattern structures the background of the obverse.
  • Latent image: Beneath the portrait sits a small field that displays changing symbols depending on the viewing angle – including the Tudor Crown and the Tudor Rose.

From the Tudor Court to Today: Over 500 Years of the Sovereign

The first Sovereign was created in 1489 under Henry VII. It took on its modern form in 1817, and as early as 1820 the double piece followed for the first time. Since then, Double Sovereigns have borne the likenesses of monarchs such as Victoria, Edward VII, and Elizabeth II – each issue a chapter of British history. With the 2027 year of issue, King Charles III continues this series. For collectors, this means: once you start gathering Sovereigns from different reigns, you rarely stop.

22 Carat Yellow Gold: Robust, Steeped in Tradition, Precise

The Sovereign is not a fine gold piece – and that is intentional. The alloy of 916.67/1,000, i.e. 22 carat, dates back to a coinage reform of King Henry VIII in 1526 and remains in use to this day. The copper content makes the gold coin more resistant to scratches and dents, a noticeable advantage with frequent handling. After the rose gold era, which ended in 2025, the Royal Mint has been striking the Sovereign in traditional yellow gold again since 2026. Notably, its weight is guaranteed to five decimal places according to the mint. Hardly any other bullion coin is specified so precisely.

Double Sovereign or 1 Pound Sovereign? An Honest Comparison

The simple Sovereign with 7.32 grams of fine gold is the classic choice for smaller amounts. The Double Sovereign delivers 14.64 grams of fine gold – around 0.47 ounces – double the amount in a single piece. This typically saves on premium per gram and on storage space in the safe. Compared to the Krugerrand, which is also struck in 22 carat, it scores points with its annual reissue and royal symbolism.

Are there any downsides? A small one. The weight is not a round ounce, which makes conversion to the gold price somewhat less intuitive. Those who later want to be especially flexible in selling small quantities therefore often combine the 2 Pound Sovereign with individual full Sovereigns.

Gold: The World's Oldest Currency in Your Hand

Even in ancient Egypt, gold served as a benchmark for trade. For over 6,000 years, it has preserved value, outlasting kings, emperors, and entire currency systems – and has never had a value of zero. Until the 20th century, many currencies were directly tied to the precious metal under the gold standard; banknotes could be exchanged for a fixed amount of gold. Today, paper money is printed at will. Gold, on the other hand, is scarce and cannot be arbitrarily multiplied.

Fiat money lives on trust in governments. Gold carries its value within itself.

This is precisely why investors value the precious metal as an inflation hedge and proven crisis protection against political and economic turmoil. Tellingly: the world's largest gold holders are the central banks themselves – evidently they, too, do not rely solely on their own paper money. For private investors in Germany, there are concrete additional benefits:

  • As investment gold, the Double Sovereign is exempt from VAT.
  • Profits from the sale remain generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.
  • Globally recognized, highly liquid, and easily converted into cash when needed.
  • Durable and indestructible – ideal for retirement provision and for passing on wealth to the next generation.
