Three coins, one design, a mintage of just 800 pieces. With this set, the Royal Mint brings you the 2027 Gold Sovereign in its most refined form: as a complete set comprising the Sovereign, Half-Sovereign and Quarter-Sovereign, with a combined face value of 1.75 Sovereign. Few series among British gold coins can look back on such a long tradition. And few years of issue bring as many innovations as this one.

St. George and the Dragon: Pistrucci's Masterpiece

On the reverse of all three coins, St. George rides against the dragon. Naked save for his helmet and flowing cloak, his short sword raised to strike, his horse rearing – beneath him the beast writhes, and beside it lies the broken lance. Benedetto Pistrucci created this composition in 1817 for the first modern Sovereign. To this day, it is considered one of the finest coin designs ever created. The year 2027 appears in the exergue, with the artist's initials "B.P." to the right. A special detail for connoisseurs: according to the Royal Mint, 2027 marks the 500th anniversary of the patron saint's first appearance on English coinage.

The obverse features the uncrowned portrait of King Charles III, designed by sculptor Martin Jennings and signed "MJ". The surrounding Latin legend reads CHARLES III · DEI · GRA · REX · FID · DEF – meaning "Charles III, by the Grace of God King, Defender of the Faith".

Back to Yellow Gold – and a True Premiere

As has been customary for centuries, the Sovereign is once again struck in classic yellow gold. What is new is something else entirely: for the very first time, the metal used for the Sovereign comes from 100% recycled gold. A milestone in British coinage history that permanently sets this year of issue apart from its predecessors.

The Proof finish demands genuine craftsmanship. The dies are hand-finished until every imperfection disappears. Each blank is placed individually into the press and struck up to six times – more slowly and with less pressure than ordinary bullion coins. The result is razor-sharp detail, a mirror-like background, and a relief that truly glows in the light.

Single Coin, Three-Coin or Five-Coin Set?

Anyone wanting just one coin should opt for the single Proof Sovereign 2027. However, this was issued in a notably larger mintage of 3,000 pieces. The five-coin set with the larger denominations is even rarer at 400 sets, but requires a multiple of the capital. The three-coin set strikes the perfect balance: it combines the series' classic denominations, remains exclusive at 800 sets, and is, for many collectors, the ideal entry point. Compared to a bullion-quality Sovereign, you pay a premium for Proof quality, the presentation case and the limited mintage – in return, you receive a collector's item with its own numismatic appeal, perfectly suited as a gift or heirloom.

Gold: Humanity's Oldest Currency

For over 6,000 years, gold has preserved wealth. Even in ancient Egypt, it served as a benchmark in trade, and kings and emperors wore it as a symbol of their power. Currencies have come and gone – gold has endured. It has never been worth zero, because it possesses an intrinsic value that does not depend on printing presses. Fiat money can be multiplied at will, whereas gold remains scarce. This is precisely why it is regarded as a proven inflation hedge and a reliable crisis protection in politically and economically turbulent times. Tellingly, the world's largest holders of gold are the central banks themselves.

"Money is gold, and nothing else." – J. P. Morgan, 1912

There is also a tangible advantage: profits from the sale of physical gold in Germany are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. Globally recognised, virtually indestructible, and ideal for passing on value from generation to generation – with this limited Sovereign set, you hold a piece of British history in your hands, one whose lustre never fades.
