Small in size, substantial in value: the 0.5g Gold Mini Kookaburra 2022 brings genuine gold into a size that makes entering physical gold investment as easy as possible. The value of this gold coin is based primarily on the fine gold it contains and moves in line with the gold price – the design is the personal touch, while the precious metal is the actual substance and reason for purchase.
The design: the Kookaburra on the branch
The obverse features a Kookaburra perched on a gnarled branch, its head slightly tilted, gazing into the distance. The dense plumage is engraved in fine lines, the long, pointed beak is clearly worked out, along with bark texture and broken twigs. The Kookaburra belongs to the kingfisher family and is famous as the "laughing Jack" for its unmistakable call reminiscent of human laughter. Along the lower edge is the inscription 1/2 g .9999 Au, with the artist's initials AS in the lower right.
The reverse shows the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II based on the design by engraver Jody Clark, framed by the inscription ELIZABETH II · AUSTRALIA 2022 and the face value 5 DOLLARS. This makes the issue official legal tender in Australia.
Second issue in the Mini Money series
The Royal Australian Mint's Mini Money series is dedicated to Australia's iconic animals. Following the Koala in 2021, the Kookaburra followed in 2022 as the second issue in the series. With a diameter of just 11.15 mm, this Australian Kookaburra coin is among the smallest gold coins available anywhere – a tiny piece of pure gold that fits comfortably into any case or collection.
Gold Kookaburra and the well-known silver classic
The Kookaburra is best known to many as a large-format silver coin – the Silver Kookaburra series has been issued in ounce sizes since 1990 and is sought after worldwide. This Mini Money issue pursues a different goal: instead of a bulky silver coin, here you hold high-quality fine gold in a handy micro denomination. Where larger bullion coins are often offered in Proof quality, the Mini Kookaburra impresses in fresh Frosted Uncirculated quality – compact, pure, and focused purely on gold value.
Investment gold in small denominations
Small units in particular are excellently suited to building wealth step by step. Small amounts of gold add up over the years to a considerable holding – and can be flexibly resold at any time. Gold has been regarded as a proven store of value for over 6,000 years; it is the oldest currency in the world and has never reached a value of zero, because it possesses an inherent, intrinsic value. This is why physical gold serves as a reliable inflation hedge and as crisis protection against loss of purchasing power and currency risks.
- Value preservation: Gold protects against loss of purchasing power and retains its physical properties across generations.
- Liquidity: Recognised worldwide, tradable at any time, and easily converted back into cash.
- Diversification: As a scarce commodity with limited supply, gold contributes to the stability of one's wealth.
- Tax aspect: Profits from the sale of physical gold are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.
Despite the personal occasion, you are acquiring fully-fledged investment gold here – minted fine gold whose value is based on the gold price.
