From the rock
Quetzalcoatlus was the largest animal that ever flew.
Its wings spanned about 11 metres. According to research calculations, it had to leap up to 2.5 metres high to take off.
No human has ever seen this animal alive: the age of the dinosaurs ended 66 million years ago, and the human genus has existed for about 2.8 million years.

Wir freuen uns, Ihnen die neue Miniserie „Prehistoric Life“ vorstellen zu dürfen. Die sehr große Nachfrage an solchen kleinen Goldmünzen hat das Bayrische Hauptmünzamt veranlasst, diese neue Serie zu produzieren. Insgesamt wird die Serie 12 Münzen umfassen und jährlich werden 3 Ausgaben erscheinen, die sich alle durch ein anderes urzeitliches Motiv auszeichnen.
Die sechste Münze dieser Ausgabe zeigt uns den berühmten Quetzalcoatlus, das vermutlich größte fliegende Lebewesen aller Zeiten. Er gehörte der Gattung der Pterosauria an, war aber jedoch vielmehr ein Reptil als ein Dinosaurier. Er besaß eine geschätze Flügelspannweite von 11-13 Metern und erreichte somit die Größe eines kleinen Flugzeuges. Besonders markant ist der riesige Schnabel, mit dem er vermutlich, wo auch immer er es wollte, Jagd auf kleinere Beutetiere – auch Dinosaurier – machte. Auch er fiel dem Massenaussterben am Ende der Kreidezeit zum Opfer.
Auch Millionen von Jahre später sind die Menschen noch immer von den Wesen aus der Urzeit fasziniert, in Museen sind Dinosaurierskelette, vor allem von Kinder das begehrteste Ausstellungsstück. Daher eignet sich diese Serie auch hervorragend als Geschenk für Kinder. Das Design der Münze wurde liebevoll und sehr detailliert gestaltet und zeigt uns auf der Motivseite einen Quetzalcoatlus mit ausgebreiteten Flügel, der sich gerade von einem Feldvorsprung erhoben hat. Im Hintergrund ist ein Fluss und zwei weitere Artgenossen zu sehen. Ebenfalls auf der Motivseite ist das Ausgabejahr, sowie der Name des Hauptdinosaurier und dessen Lebenszeitraum zu lesen. Am Rand ist der Name der Münzserie aufgeprägt. Die Wertseite zeigt uns das Wappen der Demokratischen Republik Kongo in der Mitte, sowie dem Nennwert, das Gewicht und die Feinheit.
