The 1/50 oz Somalia Elephant gold coin at a glance

  • Investment purpose: A bullion coin offering inflation hedge and value preservation; as a small denomination up to 1/4 oz, it also serves as a convenient form of crisis protection.
  • Design: Finely detailed elephant family set against stylized African flora.
  • Material / Fineness: 999 fine gold, lustrous and value-retaining.
  • Manufacturer: Produced by the renowned Bavarian Main Mint.
  • Country of origin: Republic of Somalia (agency issue, face value 20 shillings).

Design: the African elephant as a symbol of strength

Few animals embody the African savannah as impressively as the elephant. On the obverse of this miniature troy ounce gold coin, the pachyderms stride through grass and brush, encircled by the inscription »AFRICAN WILDLIFE« as well as the details »ELEPHANT« and »1/50 oz Au 999«. The reverse bears the Somali coat of arms with two leopards as shield-bearers, the year of issue 2014, and the face value of 20 shillings. The design provides the personal touch – but the substance lies in the fine gold.

African Wildlife series: gold from German minting

The Somalia Elephant series is struck as an agency issue for the Republic of Somalia at the Bavarian Main Mint, making it a gold coin of German manufacturing quality. Up to and including 2015, the issues were struck at a fineness of 999/1,000; only from 2016 onward did the fineness rise to 999.9. The 2014 year of issue is therefore an authentic piece from the early phase of the series. Unlike strictly limited special editions, the mintage of the bullion variants is determined by market demand – and today, the small denominations in particular are no longer available everywhere.

Despite its delicate format, what you are acquiring here is full-fledged investment gold – minted fine gold whose value tracks the gold price directly.

Why physical gold?

Gold is humanity's oldest currency and has outlasted every paper currency for more than 6,000 years. It possesses intrinsic value, has never been worth zero, and is recognized worldwide as a means of payment and exchange. As a scarce commodity, it protects purchasing power and preserves wealth when confidence in fiat money wanes. It is no coincidence that central banks around the globe hoard gold as a reserve.

Small units such as the 1/50 oz are ideally suited for gradually accumulating fine gold – small amounts of gold add up over the years into considerable wealth. At the same time, they are highly liquid and can be sold again at any time. And for anyone wishing to give a genuine gold investment as a christening, birthday, or Christmas gift, this coin is not a mere decorative item but a tangible asset. Another advantage: profits from the sale of physical gold are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year, and investment gold is exempt from VAT.
