The Lost Treasure: Part of the Kruger Millions?
The story of a hoard of the first coins from South Africa reads like a thriller.
After an odyssey at the beginning of the 20th century, the Ponds seemed to have vanished. Then they turned up in a Swiss vault. Now they are being offered for sale individually.
A rare, fascinating treasure of South African gold coins has been released by the South African Mint, a wholly owned subsidiary of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB).
The backstory is obscure:
We know that the Transvaal government removed large quantities of gold from Pretoria during the Second Boer War (1899–1902).
But exactly what happened to it could never be determined. The whereabouts of this gold, which gave rise to the urban legend of the "Kruger Millions", was until recently a widely disputed mystery and the breeding ground for the legend of the so-called "Kruger Millions".
The discovery of a hoard of South African "Gold Ponds" could possibly help shed some light on this mystery.
A newly discovered treasure from that era could indeed bring clarity. In the early 20th century, the coins were stored in the Netherlands and were brought to Switzerland for safekeeping shortly before World War II (1939–1945), where they remained in a Swiss vault for decades, until the "lost treasure" was recently sold at auction.
Referred to by the numismatic community as "THE LOST HOARD", the Gold "Kruger Ponde" rested in a vault for decades until the hoard was recently offered for sale at auction. The entire hoard was acquired in full by the South African Mint.
The "Gold Ponds" are currently in the possession of the South African Mint, which is now offering the historic coins for sale. The pieces were assessed and certified by NGC (Numismatic Guarantee Corporation in Florida).
Each "Gold Pond" is combined with a 1/4 ounce gold Krugerrand from 2019, which bears a limited privy mark on the coin.
The set therefore consists of a so-called "Full Pond", minted between 1893 and 1900, and a 1/4 ounce gold Krugerrand issued in 2019 with the limited privy mark "The Lost Hoard".
Only 677 examples of this rare set exist worldwide!
Each set is a unique individual piece, as the Gold Ponds have all been graded with individual mint quality ratings.
We are very proud to be able to offer the last seven pieces in outstanding condition.
Honey Mamabolo, Managing Director of the South African Mint, emphasises: "With these sets, we come as close as possible to the Transvaal Gold. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own these historic pieces. The coins were kept for over a century in a money bag that looked very similar to the one included with the set."
The authenticity of the coins has been confirmed by NGC (Numismatic Guarantee Corporation in Florida).
Each coin was individually assessed and certified by hand using the four-eyes principle and sealed in a tamper-evident plastic blister. The status as legal tender and the correct weight were also confirmed.
The packaging includes, among other things, a money bag as used to store the coins for more than a century, AND the case as well as the small booklet containing all information about the Lost Hoard Gold Sets.
Discover the Lost Hoard Krugerrand Set 2019, a historically significant and strictly limited coin series that makes collectors' hearts beat faster. With a mintage limited to just 677 pieces, this set represents a special investment opportunity — a valuable and unique collector's item that belongs in every collection.
Historical Flair with the Lost Hoard Krugerrand Set
The Lost Hoard Krugerrand Set 2019 is a tribute to the rich history of South Africa and to the legend of the 'Kruger Millions'. It impressively combines two eras of South African minting: a 1/4 ounce gold Krugerrand coin with the privy mark "Lost Hoard Krugerrand" and a historic Kruger Pond from the years 1893–1900.
A Look at the Visual Details
The gold coins are presented in an elegant dark brown wooden box with a glossy finish that captures the light and highlights the golden tones of the coins. The coins themselves are securely nestled in black plastic capsules, labelled to confirm their authenticity and high state of preservation. The coins feature the magnificent design of a springbok, surrounded by the inscription "SUID-AFRIKA" and "SOUTH AFRICA", while the reverse displays the portrait of Paul Kruger. Above the portrait, the coat of arms of South Africa is proudly displayed.
Material and Fineness - The Heart of the Set
The set is distinguished by its excellent quality. The gold coins are made of gold with a fineness of 916.67/1,000. The addition of copper not only gives the coins their distinctive colouring but also increases their durability.
Manufacturer - A Guarantee of Quality
Struck by the renowned South African Mint, a subsidiary of the South African Reserve Bank, this set is a guarantee of quality and authenticity. Each set comes with a booklet containing a certificate of authenticity and a summary of the review of information about the Kruger Millions by Professor Francois Malan.
The Story of the Lost Hoard
The Lost Hoard Krugerrand Set tells a fascinating story: during the Second Anglo-Boer War, the government of the Transvaal evacuated gold from Pretoria, which later became legendary as the 'Kruger Millions'. These coins, long hidden in a Swiss vault, have now become a significant find that has captivated the numismatic world. The South African Mint now offers the unique opportunity to own a piece of this history.

Gold is regarded as a sustainable store of value and has proven itself for over 6,000 years.
