On New Year cards around 1900, the wish was already in the picture: four-leaf clovers, ladybirds, horseshoes. These are the signs our pieces carry in gold and silver. In this coin a real four-leaf clover is enclosed in clear enamel.

The four-leaf clover

Four leaves, where three usually grow.

Clover normally has three leaflets, four only in very rare cases. The Botanic Gardens of the University of Bonn call the four-leaf clover a rare exception.

The disposition lies in the genes, as a plant breeder at the University of Georgia found. Whether the fourth leaf actually grows also depends on light and temperature.

The German dictionary Duden calls it Glücksklee: clover with an exceptionally four-part leaf, regarded as a lucky charm. The dictionary of the Brothers Grimm also lists the four-leaf clover as a Glücksblatt, a leaf of luck.

The lucky clover sold in pots, by the way, is a wood sorrel from southern Mexico that naturally has four leaves. It came to Europe in the 19th century.

“A four-leaf clover is a rarity. Lucky is the person who happens to find one.”
Museum der Kulturen, Basel

This coin carries the clover not as a picture, but for real.

The lucky ladybird

Seven spots, a lucky number.

In German folk speech the ladybird is called Glückskäfer, the lucky beetle, as the German dictionary Duden records. The Etymological Dictionary of German calls ladybirds the best known and best loved beetles, regarded as a symbol of luck.

The classic lucky charm is the seven-spot ladybird, red with seven black spots. Seven has always been considered a lucky number, writes NABU, the German nature conservation union.

By the way, the spots do not reveal a ladybird’s age. Their number stays the same throughout its life of at most one year.

A seven-spot ladybird eats 100 to 150 aphids a day, its larva 400 to 600 before it pupates.

“As a lucky charm, the seven-spot ladybird … enjoys great popularity.”
NABU, Naturschutzbund Deutschland

The real clover

Grown, not struck.

Above the clover “GOLD LUCK” runs in an arc.

Luck to give

A wish you keep.

At the turn of the year people give lucky charms. The New Year lucky charms we know today came about in the 19th century.

Many people do not want to throw their lucky charms away or pass them on, for fear the luck might go with them.

Whether lucky charms really bring luck may be left open, writes the Volkskundemuseum Wien. And it names what they are meant to say:

“Whoever gives a lucky charm wants to say: I care about you.”
Volkskundemuseum Wien

A gift for a birth or the new year, for instance: the coin comes in a capsule.

Gold does not corrode and does not dull. So the coin stays as it was struck.

1 g Gold Luck 2023 – a genuine four-leaf clover in pure fine gold

  • Design: At the centre lies a genuine, rare four-leaf clover in natural shades of green, permanently encased in clear enamel. It is framed by a delicate floral decoration of blossoms and leaves, along with the playful lettering "GOLD LUCK".
  • Material / Fineness: Struck from 1 g of fine gold with an exceptional fineness of 999.9/1,000 – the purest investment gold in an especially compact form.
  • Manufacturer: Produced in Germany; the popular "Ounce of Luck" (Four Leaf Clover) series bears the hallmark of the renowned Coin Invest Trust (CIT).
  • Year of issue & mintage: Year of issue 2023, strictly limited to just 2,023 pieces worldwide.
  • Condition: Proof quality with mirror-like fields and frosted relief – carefully delivered in a protective coin capsule.
  • Diameter & face value: 13.92 mm in diameter, official legal tender of the Republic of Palau with a face value of 1 dollar.

These special gold coins combine a charming lucky motif with the tangible substance of pure gold. The centrepiece of the reverse is an actual four-leaf clover – not a print, but a genuine piece of nature, preserved for eternity under clear enamel. This is exactly where the appeal lies: the personal touch is the shell, the fine gold is the core and the real reason for the purchase.

Design and craftsmanship: from lucky symbol to the coat of arms of Palau

The four-leaf clover has been regarded as a symbol of luck for centuries. As early as 1620, literary tradition held that finding one in a field would bring good fortune to the finder – a motif that the "Four Leaf Clover" series continues to draw upon today. Finding such a four-leaf specimen in nature only happens about once in every 10,000 leaves. This makes it all the more appealing to own this rare natural treasure, firmly set in fine gold.

Around the clover lies a frosted inner circle, while the glossy outer rim is adorned with a delicate pattern of blossoms and leaves. At the top is emblazoned "GOLD LUCK", and at the bottom the year 2023. The obverse shows the coat of arms of the Republic of Palau with the characteristic addition "Rainbow's End" as well as the face value "1$". The smooth, unmilled edge underscores the fine, clear execution in Proof quality.

Investment gold in small denomination – store of value as a gift

As appealing as the lucky motif is: what you are acquiring here is full-value investment gold. The value of this coin is based primarily on the gram of fine gold it contains and moves in line with the gold price. This makes the 1 g coin ideally suited for building up physical wealth in small, manageable steps – small amounts of gold add up over the years to a considerable holding.

  • Store of value: Gold has been a proven store of value for over 6,000 years and, thanks to its intrinsic worth, has never once dropped to a value of zero.
  • Tradability: Small units are in demand worldwide, highly liquid, and can be sold again at any time.
  • Protection: As an inflation hedge and as crisis protection, physical gold preserves purchasing power when confidence in paper currencies declines.
  • Inheritability: Physical gold can be passed down across generations with ease.

An additional advantage: profits from the sale of physical gold are, as a rule, tax-free in Germany after a holding period of at least one year. Especially for occasions such as a birth, christening, wedding or Christmas, this coin is a lovely way to give the gift of a genuine gold investment instead of a fleeting present – the recipient holds a lasting asset in their hands.

A small clover, a big promise: whoever gives or invests in this coin is not merely presenting a lucky charm, but recognised fine gold whose value is tied to the gold price.

With a worldwide mintage of only 2,023 pieces, the 2023 vintage is among the scarce issues in the series. Secure pure fine gold with an endearing story – and lay the foundation for building your wealth in gold.
