In Anerkennung der Bedeutung Südafrikas auf dem Gebiet der Erforschung von Pflanzen- und Tierfossilien, widmet die South African Mint ein neues Kapitel der Natura-Reihe der Paläontologie.
Der erste Teil der Archosaurier-Serie heißt „Aufstieg der Dinosaurier“. Archosaurier lebten vor rund 200 Millionen Jahren im südlichen Afrika und gelten als direkte Vorfahren der Dinosaurier. Ihr Aufstieg und ihre Entwicklung ist ein bedeutendes Ereignis in der Geschichte des Lebens an Land, da sie nicht nur zur Entwicklung von Dinosauriern und Vögeln führten, sondern auch zu Flugsauriern (fliegenden Reptilien) und Krokodilen.
Auf dem Motiv der 25 Rand Silbermünze ist ein Euparkeria capensis abgebildet. Das Reptil lebte vor etwa 235 Millionen Jahren in der mittleren Triaszeit und war eines der ersten zweibeinigen Wirbeltiere, deren Beine länger waren als ihre Arme. Alle Ausgaben der Serie haben die gleiche Vorderseite, welche den Kopf eines Erythrosuchus africanus Sauriers zeigt.
