On the cave wall
The Irish elk was neither only Irish nor an elk.
Its antlers spanned up to 3.65 metres. In Ireland the last one died about 11,000 years ago.
In the Chauvet Cave, besides mammoths, big cats and bears, people also painted deer, among them the giant deer.

1 Unze Goldmünze Giganten der Eiszeit – Riesenhirsch 2019 PP im Etui
Diese beeindruckende Serie widmet sich in gebührendem Respekt den Bestien, auf die einst sogar noch unsere Vorfahren Jagd machten – oder vielleicht gar selbst zur Beute wurden! Knochen und Höhlenmalereien regten die Fantasie der Designer an, das Andenken an die Giganten der Eiszeit zu bewahren. Das Ergebnis ist eine Serie mit sechs prähistorischen Tieren, vor einer eiszeitlichen Landschaft malerisch in Szene gesetzt.
Das 2. Motiv erinnert an den einst größten Hirsch seiner Art, der vor 2 Mio. Jahren die eiszeitliche Flora und Fauna durchstreifte. Der Hirsch erreichte ungefähr die Größe eines heutigen Elchs, war dabei jedoch deutlich hochbeiniger und leichter gebaut. Das prächtige Geweih, das die Männchen zur Balz trugen, erreichte eine Spannweite von 3,60 Metern – eine imposante Präsenz, die so heute unerreicht ist. In Höhlenzeichnungen ist er ein gängiges Motiv, was abermals verdeutlicht, dass die eiszeitlichen Menschen – wenn auch als Beute – diesem Tier sicherlich mit einigem Respekt begegneten. Der letzte Riesenhirsch starb wohl am äußersten Ende der Eiszeit vor 7.600 Jahren in Sibirien aus.
