Nelson Mandela (* 18. Juli 1918 in Mvezo, Transkei; † 5. Dezember 2013 in Johannesburg) war ein südafrikanischer Anti-Apartheid-Revolutionär, politischer Führer und Menschenfreund, der als Präsident von Südafrika von 1994 bis 1999 aktiv war. Er wurde in einer voll repräsentaviten demokratischen Wahl zum ersten schwarzen Staatsoberhaupt des Landes gewählt. Er dienete desweiten auch als Präsident des afrikanischen Nationalkongress (ANC) von 1991 bis 1997. Mandela saß 27 Jahre im Gefängnis, aufgeteilt zwischen Robben Island, Pollsmoor Gefängnis und Victor Verster Gefängnis.
